Road Cycling Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Eh...missing the only chance to qualify directly doesn't make someone less legitimate as a contender, otherwise we should say the same about athletes like Eleftherios Petrounias or Aurelie Muller

Well if he was a legitimate medal contender, he'd have finished in the top 10 at the worlds and qualified that way.  It's not that big a deal IMO

Not everyone gets the peak right every time.

That has more to do with the qualification system. Just because a nation has good road cyclists doesn't mean they are good in the time trial (or vice versa). Alternatively they should have given continent quotas like they did in road cycling.

Jungels has never finished higher than 10th at any world championship time trial. He wasn't a medal contender next year

Japan getting the spot ahead of Luxembourg is no big deal

Just like it would be no big deal if Latvia pipped Luxembourg to that 30th spot and they get in

It's Iran. :p

And Jungels is very much capable of getting a top-end TT result, at any Grand Tour.

It isn't a grand tour though.  The world championships time trial is a closer marker for the Olympics and I stand by my comment he isn't a medla contendor

And the point about Latvia, Iran etc is that Luxembourg might get zero ITT spots anyway, and that's not a big deal either way

no ranking yet?

I think we can expect no ranking update until Monday - the World Ranking will be published as it will be on Monday and the Olympic one will be published as it is today. Or maybe they're adding points from races from Tuesday according to the last time zone (GMT -12), no matter if there was any there and the Olympic ranking will be published tomorrow.
