The only reasonable explanation I can think of that they thought that politicians and other allies of UEFA won't get involved as they have a worldwide pandemic on their hands to deal with.

Politicians go where the people go. This is like politics 101 :d When the people have a voice, the politicians have no choice.

They didn't underestimate the sport, they underestimated UEFA and FIFA, who just demonstrated how powerful they actually are. There can't be a successful coup when people in power have more powerful allies. The governments aren't protecting the sport, they are protecting their millionaire friends inside the UEFA. For example, Orbán obviously wants UEFA to have full control over European football when one of the wealthiest Hungarians, who is his friend, is a vice president of UEFA.

Considering how they have been preparing taking it to the courtroom I have my strong doubts there.
Also considering that they apparently have had polls made that were much more positive towards the idea than reality, I strongly do believe that it was the fans and the players (and staff) killing this. It was a very naive move, no doubt, but to me, it seemed like the punches from UEFA/FIFA was in fact the one thing they were prepared for.

Btw this should not go unpunished. Madrid, Chelsea, City, Arsenal and United should be expelled from the CL/EL this season, and all the 12 clubs should be banned from playing UEFA competitions for the next season.

Ceferin is already welcoming City back, so that's unlikely. Personally I mainly hope that it'll start a cleansing of the clubs leaders including shifts in owners. I doubt fans will calm down in a near future and the anger should be sent towards the owners but also UEFA, FIFA and even national governing that has allowed the clubs to develop the way they have.

it was really "war on football" , and I really wasn't expecting "football" to win the war but wow only 2 days, :yikes: Perez was stupidly confident last night, I would love to see his face now :d

we heard a lot about the English clubs and how their fans reacted to this, they did great. but what about Italian and Spanish football fans ? mostly those 3+3 clubs ? how was the reactions from their hardcore fans ? positive ? negative ? very negative ? very very negative ? :d

Now on Spanish Mega TV a statement from the remaining rump superliga was read by the anchor of the program "El chiringuito" (the same program which had Pérez with his BS interview yesterday) that the remaining 6 does not give up, they believe their plan is fair it was just not explained enough (or sth to that extent)

They also add: given the circumstances we will explore means on how to redesign this project.
Desperation has to be really strong in Pérez HQ....

    • For the summary and lowlights of Thailand's preparation in hosting the ongoing Sea Games, I kindly suggest those who are interested to read from this English language article from Thai media outlet, Thai Enquirer: https://www.thaienquirer.com/63469/thailands-sea-games-2025-under-fire-budget-management-and-technical-controversies/
    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
    • Many permutations possible in the last game, going to be a nail-biter!  v  is the live game on the Olympic Channel later today.   2025 WCF Curling Olympic Qualification Event – Kelowna, Canada   Team   Wins   Losses   Men       CHN 6   0     P USA 5   1     P JPN 4   2     NED 3   3     PHI 3   3     KOR 2   4     NZL 1   5     POL 0   6
    • This is absolutely ridiculous. If you aren’t willing to celebrate Pride then you should simply not come to Seattle. You have to respect local customs.   https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c208392884jo
