usa shouldn't play for the bronze , Latvia/Kazakhstan are much better

+5 LOL

well, don´t forget that USA had less than 16 hours to recover after a semifinal lose against Canada. Not a easy task at all.

but yes Russia was much better than yesterday. and deserved the medal.

To be fair the US team wasn't that good. They got lucky against the Czechs and any team would have destroyed Canada given the way they played yesterday.

HALL OF FAME

IIHF honours legends

Class of 2016 inducted

The 2016 IIHF Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place today at the Radisson Royal Hotel in Moscow.

Hosted by TSN’s Gord Miller, the Hall of Fame, the ceremony honoured international hockey’s legendary contributors on the ice, behind the bench and in the broadcast booth.

The latest class of International Ice Hockey Federation inductees in the Players category included Peter Bondra, Sergei Fyodorov, Valeri Kamenski, and Ville Peltonen. Gabor Ocskay was presented with the Richard “Bibi” Torriani Award. Pat Quinn and Ben Smith were honoured in the Builders category and Nikolai Ozerov given the Paul Loicq Award.

Ocskay, Quinn and Ozerov were inducted posthumously.

The program began with Nikolai Ozerov being given the Paul Loicq award. Ozerov was a tennis champion, actor and the voice of the Russian nation. With a broadcast career that began in 1950, Ozerov covered some 30 World Championships and all Super Series in the seventies and eighties.

“With his voice he became every much as popular as the players he talked in all those games he covered, including Kharlamov and Tretiak,” Journalist Sergei Gusev said in talking about Ozerov.

The first member of the class of 2016 honoured was Valeri Kamenski. A member of the elite Triple Gold Club, Kamenski was grateful for the honour.

“I thought it would be easier [to give a speech]. But when they called my name, when they said a few words about me, I was overwhelmed by a lot of emotion,” Kamenski said later. “Suddenly I got nervous - it's easier to go out on the ice than to say a few words in front of a crowd of people.”

Current Finnish assistant coach Ville Peltonen was inducted but was with his team at their morning practice. His wife Hanna gratefully accepted the award before her husband made it to the induction room later. Peltonen represented Finland 19 times and won 13 medals, an unprecedented number among Finnish players.

Pat Quinn left a great hockey legacy and reputation in the NHL and internationally. Miller remarked what the Great One thought of Quinn.

“Wayne Gretzky said of Pat Quinn, ‘Of all the people I’ve known in the game of hockey, I never met anyone who worked at it harder or loved it more than Pat Quinn.’”

His daughter Kalli delivered a moving tribute to her father.

“My father always said they don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. He cared but he also wanted to know as much as he could about the game of hockey.”

Another coach joining Quinn in the IIHF Hall of Fame was Ben Smith who led Team USA women to Olympic gold in 1998 and a Women’s World Championship in 2005.

“Someone once told me that the key to being a good coach is getting off the bus with the best players,” Smith said. “I took that early advice.”

Peter Bondra is a legend in Slovakia not only for his outstanding NHL career but scoring the biggest goal in the country’s international history. With 100 seconds remaining in the 2002 World Championship gold medal game between Slovakia and Russia, Bondra scored to lift his team to a 4-3 win and its first gold medal.

“I’d like to than Slovakian hockey. I was always proud to play for my country, Olympics or World Championships. My dream was to always play for the national team and score the game-winning goal for a gold medal. My dream came true.”

Another moving tribute came when Gabor Ocskay’s daughter, Suzanna, spoke of the influence her father still has in Hungary. Ocskay made his debut for Hungary as a 17-year-old and represented the team 16 times. He helped elevate the team to the top division of the World Championship in 2008. Sadly, a few weeks before he could get the chance to play in the 2009 tournament in Switzerland – the country’s first top-division appearance in 70 years – he died of a heart attack.

“The family and the whole Hungarian community, which is like family, have never forgotten him,” she said. “The rink in his hometown of Szekesfehervar bears his name since 2009 and the ice hockey academy is named after him. Some of the players who trained there were members of this national team that competed in St. Petersburg.”

Finally, Sergei Fyodorov was saluted for a career that included winning the NHL’s Hart trophy as most valuable player and as a three time Stanley Cup champion. Legendary coach Scotty Bowman said of Fyodorov he was one of his favorite players to coach and the only one who could play both forward and defence.

"I am so honoured and so pleased that this life of hockey that has given me so much joy has brought me to this place and this special recognition." Fyodorov said. "I had a lot of fun during my career but it's not alway that easy. There were a lot of tears and a lots of negative things. But all that is overcome when you achieve an honour like today's induction into the HoF."

    • whatever you heard is just speculation. no one knows at the moment, probably even the orange himself.   and Iranian athletes failed to get visa so many times before. even female athletes. there is no pattern, it's just too random.    and yes Iran has a system of compulsory military service for men, and there is 50% chance for anybody to be randomly drafted by IRGC affiliated organizations. that's the case for Taremi and few others in the current team.
    • Would you believe the NCAA Indoor season has already started?
    • Some changes that I've noticed:   3x3 Basketball: With the expanded 12 team field, one extra team per gender qualifies through world rankings, one extra team qualifies through the universality driven tournament and there's now an Olympic Qualifier series to award the final quotas.   Beach Volleyball: Continental qualifiers have have priority over the World championship and World Rankings quotas and there's now Olympic Qualifier Series quotas.   Canoe Sprint: World ranking system now in place and will be used instead of awarding world championship quotas. Road Cycling: 2 nations ranking quotas per gender moved to universality.   Track Cycling: Sprint and Keirin ranking list is now combined and will award 14 quotas per gender. Previously it was 7+7. Team pursuit down to 8 quotas from 10. 2 of the quotas have been moved to madison (one additional team) and 6 to the omnium.   Fencing: Can get a Continental quota of you finished in the top 24 of the rankings. It was previously top 16.    Hockey: 2 pro league quotas replace two qualification tournament quotas.   Judo: 5 less universality places and 4 more Continental places. For men, there's two more spots for Asia, one less for Oceania and 1 more for the Americas. For the women, there's one more spot for Europe, one less for Oceania and two more for Asia.   Modern Pentathlon: Less quotas awarded through world rankings as a result of quota cuts.   Open Water Swimming: Introduction of world ranking qualifier.   Sailing: In general, seems to be more quotas awarded at the last chance regatta and less quotas at the World Championships   Shooting: One less quota handed out at each World Championship and the return on World Cup qualifiers.   Swimming: Olympic qualification and consideration times renamed to A and B standard. B standard is now 1% slower than the A standard compared to 0.5% in 2024. Stroke 50s have their own direct qualification events and have minimum time standards instead of A and B standards. Qualification times have been nuked again. B standard selection process has also changed.   Volleyball: New revised format. Continental championships first, then world championships followed by world rankings. In 2024, it was 3 qualification tournaments and then world rankings. Only 3 countries per gender will qualify by world rankings now compared to 5 in 2024
    • For Italy, the match against Japan and likely the final match against Estonia will be a safe/relegation game, but I'm think that whether the match against Estonia will be decisive on anything, if we have 0 points after 4 matches. We're currently the worst team here – we have 0 points and are taking significantly fewer shots than our opponents in each match. Japan and Estonia are looking better for now and unfortunately, without significant improvement play starting tomorrow, we'll likely be relegated to the fourth division. With the absence of Russia and Belarus, this will be a shame, even for the weaker 2006/2007 age generation. Especially, since we are playing this tournament at home. For anyone could have competed with a good shape, except perhaps Hungary, who are currently the best team in the tournament.
    • They shouldn't promise additional spots to countries that qualify 3 athletes in each distance, because then taking those spots away isn't fair. For example, in Italy, Previtali won the 500m QO for country but he would likely have to stay at home because the staff probably would have chosen Casinelli for the relay (Casinelli won't be competing individually at all). I don't know what the situation is in Canada with the fifth-place skater? Will this person only compete in the relay, or will he also be a reserve there?
    • That's too bad. Athletes who finish in the top 32 (or 36 for the 1590m) should be the priority over the 5th athlete from a relay country.   So Croatia loses their 2nd women's quota, Hong Kong loses their only women's quota and Poland loses their 3rd women's quota.   This means that Great Britain, Slovakia and Ukraine should fill up the rest of the 1500m field since they are the highest placed reserves that doesn't require an additional quota.
    • Philip Rivers' possible return to NFL while being a semifinalist for the Hall of Fame certainly wasn't on my bingo card. But well. So far he's only on the practice squad
