And the bad news is that the world’s most beloved horse Saint Boy has been sensationally fired from the men’s show jumping round.

I think he resigned before he was fired.

Is the new format 8 or 12 in the laser run? Samantha Murray on the BBC said eight earlier on but the trial used both formats and I can’t find confirmation that it’s been settled yet.

I think the central problem MP at the Olympics is this insistance on being a last weekend event.  If they

  • Kept the existing format
  • Switched the stadium events to Day 1 + 2 when not many medals are given out
  • Held the Fencing RR on Day -1 or 0 like the Archery RR

It would all be a lot more attractive & get more TV attention. But it’s never going to get a huge audience against the big team sport final rounds.

And even more so having it on the same day as the show jumping and having one of the laser run’s clash with the start of the evening athletics season. I wonder how many countries showed it live on their main channel outside of the BBC

I watched the OG on the Eurosport 90%+ of the time but as I gathered :HUN public television kept changing from its main event coverage for a brief time when a Hungarian competitor was coming up somewhere else.

So I can imagine that they have shown live only the 2 brief segments where the :HUN were riding/running/shooting etc and then changed back to what they were showing originally. But the whole event, no way of course

Here in the Uk yesterday the jumping was on the secondary feed of the BBC live with extended highlights shown on the main channel before the entire laser run was shown live while today the British pair swimming heat was shown I think live but the jumping was not (at least not in it’s entirely) live on any channel other than Discovery + but extended highlights were shown before the Laser run was entirely live.

Budapet trial in April had 12 for women and 18 for men, so there's no consistency so far..

The women's laser run was on one of the main channels here in Denmark. Didn't notice if the men's was.

Fencing

1st :GBR Joe Choong - 25+1 (252 points) / :GER Annika Schleu - 29+0 (274 points)

36th :UZB Alexander Savkin - 7+0 (142 points) / :ECU Marcela Cuaspud - 4+0 (124 points)

Swimming

1st :USA Amro El Geziry - 1:52.96 (325 points) / :ROC Gulnaz Gubaydullina - 2:07.31 (296 points)

36th :AUS Ed Fernon - 2:10.85 (289 points) / :BRA Maria Iêda Guimarães - 2:32.16 (246 points)

Feels like fencing is way too important while swimming doesn't really matter too much.

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
