But it's not complicated :p

Take the team sprint, it's really not complicated at all.

Qualifying for time, then heats:

1st vs 8th

2nd vs 7th

3rd vs 6th

4th vs 5th

So far, so good and easy. That's four heats, two fastest winners go for gold, two slowest winners go for bronze. Ergo, lose your heat and you're out of the medals.

Oh, I thought that all team events have this (pursuit) progression system:

Progression: The winners of heats 3 and 4 in the First Round ride the final for the gold and silver medals. The remaining six teams will be ranked by their times in the First Round and will be paired as follows: The two fastest teams ride the final for the bronze medal. The next two fastest teams ride the final for 5th and 6th places. The last two teams ride the final for 7th and 8th places.

I haven't been following track cycling, has the progression system of team events always been so (unnecessarily?) complicated?

Well, 5 athletes are going to the Olympics for each team following an extremely long qualification period. They can race as many stages as they please in my book.

Much better than table tennis, where 16 athletes go to the Olympics just to lose one match for their team.

Nope :p

But even the pursuit one isn't so complicated as they make it seem with a whole bunch of text. Maybe this is easier, going with the qualifying positions again:

First round, top half of the bracket (going for gold)

1st vs 4th

2nd vs 3rd

First round, bottom half of the bracket (maximum is bronze)

5th vs 8th

6th vs 7th

The two top half winners ride for gold, all other six teams are ranked by time only and the two fastest of those six go for bronze.
