Weightlifting at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

It would be tragic to see weightlifting be removed, but at some point how many chances does the IWF deserve?

(In any case the rule change is ridiculous and how much power is being concentrated in the Executive Board is really disturbing)

One reality doesnt exclude the other. IOC has become more and more undemocratic. Even the bidding process with various cities was exciting for me. And this has been vanished..

Sadly I think this need to be done. The sport of weightlifting would benefit greatly from being suspended for one Olympic cycle and returning under different governing body. The amount of systematic doping cases is really alarming and IWF is not putting the adequate resources and focus on it.

This is more like a blackmail from IOC and they won't scratch weightlifting from the programme mainly because China is so dominant here. Scaling back on boxing and threatening to drop wrestling carried more value since China isn't so good in both (and actually they have some presence in women's boxing which makes the women boxing category expansion even more understandable). Any cuts in sports where USA and China are good at simply won't happen IMO.

Baseball didn't even have 8 nations competing like before and it doesn't even hold World Championship that anyone cares about (even Baseball Classic is basically like U23 football tournament?). Weightlifting has opened up to South America lately and has a much bigger global appeal while baseball is only limited to USA, Japan, Korea & minor Caribbean countries plus maybe Mexico. That's it. Since most baseball fans pay attention to MLB they couldn't be bothered to lobby for the Olympic status of the sport IMO.

Even if they finally keep wheightlifting in paris there will be less events (10). This anyway will affect China

The limits were there before anyway so no country could field athletes in all weight classes. Imagine if IOC told Japan they can't field an athlete in every judo category? As usual, double standards is king :coffee:

    • this is not funny at all, pal
    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
    • Belgium is the luckiest in this story
