so, handball gets screwed and has to play the preliminary in a small hall with no air conditioning in the middle of Summer...

If I were the IHF, I'd never accept this, If I were the French NT's handball players, a strike would start immediately...

One would assume AC would be built in before 2024?

no, because it's a temporary venue...

normally it's an exhibition pavillion with no relation to sport events...

that's why the basketball players and FIBA didn't want their tournament to be hosted in that location (the 9m "only" roof was just an excuse, and it would be the same problem for handball, in case)...

World Athletics to introduce repechage round at  Paris 2024

The World Athletics Council has approved an innovation to the regular competition format for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, introducing a repechage round to all individual track events from 200m to 1500m in distance, including the hurdles events.

In the new repechage format, athletes who do not qualify by place in round one heats, will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in repechage heats.

:yikes:

they're crazy...

so, unless you're at the absolute top of the game, now going as fast as you can is not enough anymore...you need to be lucky with the draw of the people you're going to face in your heat -and possible repechage round (and in the shorter distances also with the lane draw) if you want to have a chance to go through the following round...

and moreover, you have to run one more round than your strongest opponents in case you make it through to the semis (which is going to kill your chances to make another round of the event)...

imho, that's unfair to half of the athletes (at least) and a clear incentive to dope more and more, as the requirements are always tougher...

maybe an elimination race will be fine too, you know, run the 100m until only two will left..

same for 10000m run 25 races until the last 2 stands :p

Anyway off topic but I just read today that from Brisbane 2032 all olympic Swimming competitions will be held on the 25m pool ! I swear it is written here  https://www.olympic.sk/clanok/olympijske-hry-2024-v-parizi-ktore-sa-zacnu-uz-o-dva-roky-budu-v-duchu-inovacii

...These standards correspond not only to the sustainable ambitions of the IOC, but also of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). In an effort to further support the sustainability of the Olympic Games, the IOC proposed to reduce the size of the Olympic pool from 50 to 25 meters and to use digital technologies and robots instead of timers.  The changes should apply after the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane....

I'm both in favour of and against this :p

The time-based thing is excellent, but especially for the Olympics I also like the fact that this gives the athletes from minor countries, who'd certainly be far from any qualifying spot, a second chance to compete and show themselves.

It's always kind of sad to see an athlete from Micronesia or something compete for a few seconds and then that's their Olympics.

To be honest, an elimination race like in track cycling...I'd absolutely watch that :d

Laps are longer of course, so the format has to change a little to not let it take too long. Maybe the last two or three athletes every lap, or two separate lines on the track where the last placed athlete is eliminated.

Add another problem. If athletes can no longer qualify by time, then what's to stop them from walking 200-1500 m in the heats?

Yeah, if you've got a 200m heat with two or three fairly regular sub-20 runners and you've got a 20.20 PB, you might as well just put all your cards on the repechage...

This sort of feels like the one time a few years ago they changed the Formula 1 qualifying format. They'd all set a time for some minutes and from a certain moment, every minute the last-placed rider would be eliminated. Resulting in everyone going for it for a few minutes and the track being entirely empty - as in, literally nobody was driving - for the remainder of the session :d They did quickly scrap that.

    • It's good that Argentina is starting to get back on track economically. Every year, all of our alpine skiing teams train in August in Argentina in Ushuaia: "Fine del Mundo", as it advertises itself.
    • The relation of Trump with Russia and, more specific, with Putin is probably the most controversial (being generous) thing of the presidence of Trump, i dont believe the same but is clearly that China help democrats in that election, both are playing their games.   In Argentina the society is clearly divided, the people who are in the left side of the politics, peronist and kirchnerism are very against the goverment, propably the only genuine "rigth-wing" goverment since the recovery of the democracy in 1983. For me and the most part who are in the rigth wing: libertarians, nacionalist and conservatives, is probably the best goverment we see to this days, he made in his first year with a very few legislators in the congress some big and good changes:   1) In the economical: the inflation is only 3% per month since a more of 15% in the last months of the last year, Argentina has now fiscal, financial and comercial surplus-   2) Our country didnt have fighter planes and the goverment buy 24  American F16  -   3) He chances the electoral sistem for a "single ballot" sistem, we have an obsolete electoral sistem that doesnt change from the 19 century and specially, the peronist use for make fraud.   4) In my personal case, he really update the tax sistem for smal/medium profesionals and traders.......and that save us to pay the 50% of our earnings to the state.   With a big expectations in the goverment, its better than i thinked before.
    • It could be better, or it could be much worse, for example, if the accusations that he has been accepting large amounts of money from Russia since 2017 are confirmed. Now let Harris win, which will end Trump's political career and I hope that in 4 years the Republicans will put up someone more predictable.     btw, how is this controversial president of Argentina doing?
    • More predictable is not always better, for me the goverment of Biden was one of the worst of the History of USA and i cant imagine what can happen with even a worse version like Harris is.   I hope, for the contrary, Trump be elected and "may be" the things changes for the better in the world.
    • I once read that Harris had never been to Europe before 2020, when she became vice president. On the other hand, her foreign policy will be more predictable, because it will be a continuation of Biden's policies. That is why I hope Harris wins, although the bookmakers are betting on Trump.
    • Harris is totally green on foreign policy. It will probably be a policy 100% led by Biden's people. Harris' main campaign emphasis is on abortion and women's rights.
    • So much for "everybody's laughing at us if we elect Harris"
    • My favorite tennis tournaments of the year (wta/atp finals)
    • was also invited to the special edition of the Bolivarian Games and seems like  is not participating.
