Still have to wait to see what effect the calls for boycott that keep growing in Canada and the USA have. The sponsors boycott movement could really affect the NHL if they get targeted for supporting the games.

That's a big if.  There's only 5 months til the games, so I don't think their efforts will get organized in time to have a serious effect

I am still waiting to see China's roster. Some people say they may have many western naturalized players, some ppl say that still :CHN citizenship is hard to gain and China is a proud country to naturalize foreign players. Well, let's see. Anybody has any info about their most recent roster?

Rumors saying there exactly 4 (four) Chinese born players in the team, 17 north-american with Chinese heritage and 3 players without any connection to China other than their club team (Kunlun Red Star) which will be 99% of the :CHN team roster in Beijing.

IIHF already changed its naturalization policy, precisely because of this case, now you do not have to play 2 years in the country to being eligible, which means Jeremy Smith is already assured to be the Goaltender of China at the Olympics.

Here is the current Kunlun roster (you can imagine 95% of this team will play for China at the Olympics) https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0075992022.html

Thanks a lot. But still, I watch ice hockey quite a lot and these fellas are still sort of no names for me and money other hockey fans. To be honest, as for national pride, I would still stick with only Chinese players. Just my personal opinion....... What do you think? @Vic Liu

will Italy be so stupid not to take advantage of that (and not call up all the NHL/AHL available players), as it happened in 2006 when we said the IIHF we didn't need such a favour?

Yes, I fear... :wall:

The process of naturalization is almost finished and there is almost no public hearings or interviews. Most Chinese fans are not aware of it at all so I don't know general opinion. For me, Chinese blood players are never with problems, East and Middle Asian players are not big problems since they also partially live in China. For typical non-Asian players, I personally don't encourage the naturalization but still acceptable if the amount is not too many in the team and 3 people is still reasonable for me. Below is the Kunlun Red Star team list with nationality showed. I presumed those with Chinese nationality will participate WOG.

Interesting point of view :phttps://chinasportsinsider.com/2021/09/05/confirmed-nhl-stars-set-to-play-at-2022-beijing-olympics/

However someone in a special hockey forum send the expected :CHN roster with current status, IIHF will soon officially inform about removing the 2 years play in a country to be able to represent rule, according to rumors...

Spoiler

Most players would appear to be eligible as long as they are given passports upon nomination, only four or so players have evident eligibility problems that the IIHF will kindly need to make go away:

GK
Alexander Lazushin (less than 16 consecutive months in China)
Paris O'Brien
Jeremy Smith (less than four consecutive years in China / Team USA)

D
Victor Bartley (less than four consecutive years in China / Team Canada)
Jake Chelios
Jason Fram
Colin Joe
Ryan Sproul
Mikaël Tam
Zach Yuen

F
Parker Foo
Spencer Foo
Sam Hu
Cory Kane
Luke Lockhart
Josh Nicholls
Alex Riche
Chris Seto
Greg Squires

Ethan Werek (less than four consecutive years in China / Team Canada)
Tyler Wong
Brandon Yip

    • you're obsessed! but who cares about a team of mercenaries? the players have to be true "Italians", which means they have to have Italian blood running through their veins, they have to feel the love for the Country, they have to feel their heart bumping when the Anthem is played, they have to really want to play for us there's no need to bring here people not good enough to make their native NT, just pick and train our young girls! waterpolo isn't that complicated, just needs a strong physical preparation and being smart enough to understand the tactical situation and take the correct decisions in the pool   ps and frankly, better find a swimmer capable of winning multiple medals than a winning team in a sport watched just by the players' relatives 😈

    • I don't think rankings are fair in cricket. There's no cricket between India and Italy or Papua New Guinea for the latter team to improve their performance or get better in rankings. It's just top 8 teams that regularly play against each other.   In long term, if more teams being competitive there will be more interesting match ups rather than between same old teams.
    • I understand your disappointment as a neutral Olympics fan  , but the qualification pathway that both ICC & IOC has agreed on is based on pure merit. In fact many other Olympic sports has world ranking system as the primary  means of qualification . This achieves 2 things, it rewards the best nations in that particular sports who have managed to perform at the highest level over a period of time rather than a one off playoff/qualifiers & secondly it ensures you get quality matches among the best teams in the world at the Olympic level. There is a reason world rankings are used as a parameter for qualification in multiple Olympic sports.  I am delighted for  & they qualified on merit albeit via penalty kicks, but how many Canadians (or the global audience)will be interested to watch a World cup opening match at home v  as compared to v . You will get your answer as to why ICC choose world rankings over  a random qualifier.

    • It would be great if  women Italy water polo returned to the top, where volleyball is now. These 2  teams + basketball and football and maybe softball, would be a nice to see for the women's team sports in LA in 2028.   https://www.instagram.com/p/DVs-BAdjPyd/?img_index=2
    • https://www.instagram.com/izachiappini   She's currently playing in Roma, but I see she's 171 cm height... She's a bit short, and that's a big problem for the Italian National Team. I also don't know if there's even any talk of her returning to the Italian National Team? She is 31, which is still an age to return to play in NT. The ITA has changed head coaches, so maybe there's still a chance for a her return? There's no one left from that 2019 team, except for Roberta Bianconi.
    • For me, it's nonsense –in the Italian National Team played with players from Hungary, Brazil, etc., although perhaps not at that particular time. Regarding the 2019-2021 period, it was a generational change after coach Fabio Conti times. The team was in crisis and didn't qualify for the 2021 Olympics. I don't remember what the atmosphere was like back then, but honestly, I don't remember that particular this Brazilian player in our squad. If there was a problem, it was more of a personal one. Many people from that squad are gone, but the crisis in the Italian team continues and is more of a structural one – the players are too weak physically. In my opinion, it would be advisable to naturalize someone strong to change the Italian team's power.
