Brazil, Germany and France, for sure. Belgium has lost one of their best gymnasts, and Australia will see the return of Lauren Mitchell, so they will fight for the final team quota with Romania.

It's insane that at this point Romania will depend on Catalina Ponor once again. And she doesn't perform on the worst apparatus for the team, Uneven Bars, so the team will have trouble reaching an acceptable score on this apparatus.

Any chance for Switzerland with Steingruber? Or rest of the team just not good enough? And I don't know much about Korea's team

Now, if Romania doesn't qualify a full team, both Iordache and Ponor will be automatically not eligible for the Olympics. Only gymnasts who perform on all four apparatus in the Test Event can apply for the spot at the Olympics.

I hope and pray Romania gets one of the team quotas. I want to see Iordache and Ponor in Rio!

I don't think Switzerland has any chance to qualify a full team. Steingruber is not on her best days, and the other girls are relatively weak. South Korea also has a weak team, and they rely too much on one single gymnast (Yun Narae), which is never a good idea.

Sadly we will have to compete without Janas, she is injured again and will probably miss Rio. At this point i think that she should just end her career ...

I actually predicted that this would happen when i first took notice of her (in 2013). Thats just what always happens when Germany has a talent like her. She is the biggest talent Germany ever had in artistic gymnastics (on the womens side), but obviously its not supposed to be that we are good in womens artistic gymnastics ...

Even without Janas we should clearly be good enough to qualify. I hope that we will compete with Berger, Scheder, Schäfer, Seitz and Alt. We will miss Janas especially at floor and balance beam, but our strength at uneven bars should give us a big advantage.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Does anybody have any further news on Dipa Karmarkar??

I have gone through the rules and it is clear that if north korea pulled out, then both Colombia and India (who is 2nd reserve) will be invited.

However, here's why I have a bad feeling. The registration list has no women athletes from North Korea and also has one women athlete from Colombia. But it does not have India !!! I also double-checked and every other country who is eligible has registered.

However, 40 individual non-qualified athletes should be competing at the event and the registration has been listed for only 39. Also, registration is as of Feb 25.

So, either India has registered after Feb 25, or the more scary alternative is that the INDIAN GYMNASTICS FEDERATION SCREWED UP LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS (and unfortunately things like that happen in India) !!!

Romania still has other talented gymnasts and with enough technical potential to form a team of five that would put on a good fight: Catalina Ponor, Diana Bulimar, Laura Jurca, Andreea Iridon, Anamaria Ocolisan, Silvia Zarzu, Maria Holbura etc.

    • River Flow in the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton: Olympics/Paralympics Rowing/Canoe Venue With some concerned with river flow unfairly affecting some rowers/canoe paddlers more than others in both types of races, Rockhampton Regional Council said the months of July and August, when the Olympic/Paralympic competitions will be held traditionally saw the least need for the Fitzroy Barrage to open in response to river flows. Queensland Senator Matt Canavan also says: “Rowing authorities, who wanted the rowing held elsewhere, have raised the issue of the streamflow of the Fitzroy river, but this question has locals scratching their heads as much as the crocodile hype has.” “The Olympic Games are due to be held in winter, and Rockhampton gets barely any rain then.” “A recent hydrological study of the Fitzroy concluded that the river falls to almost zero flow in the winter months.” “World rowing rules state that courses should have no significant current, which is generally interpreted as a streamflow velocity of 0.1m per second or less to ensure fairness across lanes.” “Data from the Fitzroy River shows that in July and August (when the Games will occur) flow rates are below this threshold 99.9 per cent of the time.” “Indeed, the average flow rate at this time of year is half the recommended threshold. And this data is from a gauge upstream of a weir. The flow rates at the rowing course will be even lower than this.” “World rowing authorities have also been flexible on these rules for the Los Angeles games in 2028.” “The rowing in LA will occur at the Marine Stadium at Long Beach.” “This rowing course is connected to the ocean and affected by tides.” “Flow rates in the waters surrounding the course (in LA) have been measured at up to 0.2m per second, double the recommended threshold.” “Marine Stadium at Long Beach has been approved despite this.” “And the rowing course in LA will be the shortest in Olympic history at just 1500m, rather than the standard 2000m.” “Unlike LA, the Fitzroy River is not impacted by tides because barrages control flows from the ocean.” “And, unlike LA, neither the streamflow rules nor the length of the course will need to be compromised to hold Olympic rowing at Rockhampton.” * * * * * * So both World Rowing and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) will need to do their inspections and technical assessments during July/August which is when the Olympic/Paralympic competitions will be held.   * * * * * *    The actual Rockhampton Rowing Course for racing is in this link.
    • No Crocodile Concerns - Olympic Rowing Course, Fitzroy River - Rockhampton   From ABC News Australia:   Crocodile farm owner John Lever, who has been working with the animals for more than 40 years, said the population in the river should not be a concern and could be managed. "I think we have to look at it sensibly. It's a great opportunity ... it's a fabulous river," Mr Lever said.   "Crocodiles are most active at night and there won't be night-time activities. Crocs are actively feeding at the water's edge and the rowing will be held over deep water."   Mr Lever is a long-time advocate of the government re-categorising the stretch of the river where rowing is held as an active removal zone to have crocodiles surveyed, trapped and removed.   He said crocodiles were less active in winter when the Olympics were expected to be held (in July/August winter time).   "You're more likely to get hit by a bus on the way to the boat ramp than you are to be taken by a croc," he said.   "In the winter time when the water temperatures go right down, the crocodiles become lethargic and don't eat much because they can't digest food.”
