Also, calling the sport figure skating is very much an English language thing. It translates as artistic skating in most languages.

It's called figure skating in Poland ;)

The plot twist is with gymnastics - we call rhythmic gymnastics as artistic gymnastics and artistic gymnastics as sport gymnastics

The competitors found it boring as hell and it made for terrible television (that is if the networks even bothered to show it).  As much as it put the "figure" in figure skating, it's one of those relics of the sport and Olympic competition that no one really misses

Even when :GBR had two Gold Medallists in 1976 & 1980 the BBC did not show it. Just highlights of our own competitors.  I don't think there were even spectators - they certainly would not have been able to see anything, because only the judges had the right angle to see what was happening.

Very detailed article on wiki about it.  They suggest that the dominance of young skaters is only possible because figures took years to master

@Book@GrassmarketYeah, compulsory figures. Denise Biellmann finishing out of medals in 1980 OG despite 1st in FS and 2nd in SP is probably the most known instance of CF negative impact.

I'm also reminded as I know Canadians are painfully aware that if figures hadn't been a part of the 1984 Olympics, then Brian Orser would have won gold.  Hamilton could have finished 4th in the free skate that year and still beat Orser who finished 7th in the figures

We call it beauty skating, if we're using the literal translation.
