Well from just a spectator point of view these are mostly terrible changes. like almost all of IOC's changes. bunch of morons make decisions without any kind of transparency.

especially that team Alpine combined idea . :facepalm:that individual AC was much better at least. what's the point of having this ? will they ever learn that a sport like Alpine Skiing doesn't need a team event?

I like the idea of having the same distance for men and women in CC skiing though but are women ready for a 50km race ? :mumble:

They did go further than the men in Beijing :p

It’s probably fine for the time being. Ski Jumping still enjoys higher participation then some of the more niche freestyle events cough *aerials* cough.

I'm just waiting for IOC to pull the mythical "new fans" attraction card in order to justify killing off ski jumping and nordic combined. Ice skateboarding would probably be urban enough to be viewed as better replacement - though technially slopestyle is skateboarding on skis already so maybe not.

In the near future WOG will probably be held in Saudi Arabia or somewhere in the Middle East and the funny thing is those sheiks could actually afford to build a completely useless ski jumping hill which would be used 3-4 times and then swiftly dismantled.

yes, they already competed for years in the Ski Classic circuit, which is made of races well beyond 50kms up to 90kms (Vasaloppet).

actually, mass start races that long could be more enjoyable on the women's side than in men's, where normally it all ends up in a sprint finish.

So… news from the EB. Some Milan 2026 events got changed at the request of the FIS.

  • Cross Country Skiing: all men’s and women’s events contested over the same distance
  • Alpine Skiing: the combined is now a team event (one downhiller and one slalom specialist)
  • Nordic Combined: the team event is replaced by the team sprint (LH/2x7.5km)
  • Ski Jumping: the men’s team event is replaced by the so-called super team event with two athletes per team.

hate the new ski jumping team event format. IMO the worst change the IOC has made to the Winter Olympics since I started following.

So now it's a men's and a women's team event in alpine? Duo's of one speed and one technical specialist are at least better than the parallel teams, where technical specialists always get an extra medal chance for whatever reason (although I guess that will stay as well, so technical specialists will be cheering as always :p).

And the cross-country thing is just awful, largely. Women doing 50k like last season, fine, and finally....but the men having to do the 10k interval is just laughable and way, way too short :(

I can hardly imagine aerials having any serious following anywhere in the world at all, but at least it's....urban? :p

The women staying behind in distances is kind of like the athletics world believing women weren't ready to race 1500m or longer until not even that long ago :p

The debut of the women's 50k at the top level was actually a great race, much better than the usual men's 50k even, where most of the time it's just a matter of staying together for 48km and then sprinting.

Women are also more than capable of doing a 15k interval start though, but that's not urban enough for FIS, IOC, etc and all the other old men deciding things.

Milan Cortina 2026 unable to find company willing to build sliding centre:

The venue intended to host sliding sports at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games is still yet to have a company willing to carry out critical construction work.

The Organising Committee had launched a search for tenders to develop the Cortina Sliding Centre, which is due to stage bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton.

Milan Cortina 2026 has confirmed that "no offers have been received" following the end of the first part of the tender procedure which began on June 5.

Costs for the facility have skyrocketed with the original expected figure of €41.7 million (£36.5 million/$45.3 million) increasing to €85 million (£72.9 million/$92.5 million).

A deadline of November 2025 has been set by Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026 (SIMICO), the Games' body responsible for overseeing venue readiness, for the completion of the venue.

it's more complicated than that

the fact that the public auction went empty is not a bad thing in itself

now the organizing committee has free hands to call whoever they want, even a different company from abroad and not being stuck with the idiots that built the Cesana Track on a totally wrong project

unfortunately, it's also true that time is closing down and most likely there won't be any track in Cortina and the Olympic events will be held in Skt. Moritz

    • so, the Swiss reigning champions, who saved their ass in the last match of the RS, now are almost safe in the semis once again...   very impressive performance also by RB Salzburg, I didn't expect them to make such a good run, even if the 2nd leg match won't be easy at all and they're all but safe in the final four

    • I guess 65, 79, 88, 110, 110+ will be the Olympic classes for 2028 (I don't think IOC would allow them to increase the number of gold medals available at the Games yet...most likely they want to to stay with the current lineup and see how it goes in the next Olympic cycle in terms of doping scandals before taking any decision)  or maybe they will keep those weights for the "regular activity" and later on they will set 5 different weight classes only good for Olympic purposes, with dedicated tournaments when it's time for the OQ (like Taekwondo, more or less)  but it's just my personal speculation, I have no infos from the inside
    • Today the funniest tournament of the season, the Shoot Out, will starts
    • Luckily for us, it happened exactly as we thought. Unfortunately, the Serbian players had to play the entire match, the difference in value between the starters and the reserves being quite large, and thus at the end of the match their fatigue was evident.
    • if they limit the number of qualified athletes to 8 per category that will not exceed the allocated quota (marginally). I know 8 athletes only is a bit harsh but will be more competitive.
    • Thank you for putting this together, it was fun to go through. From your keyboard to God's ears on Canada's short track team here (I believe you have us at 4-1-1, which is realistic if everything works out).   Leaving us off the podium in speed skating women's pursuit was interesting.   Three medals of any colour in curling would be celebrated at this point after two disasterous cycles.   In hockey, I'll always take our girls over the Americans (was "lucky" enough to see them lose in 2018 in person, though. Only time in 6 Games. Haha...hahahahaha...ha).    For the men, I said above unless Canada finds a goaltender I'm not too optimistic. USA is just too well rounded. But lots can happen by then, and in a one game elimination tournament.
    • big decision by IWF   new weight categories, 8 for men and 8 for women from June 2025   Men 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, +110kg Women 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, +86kg   and this means all World records will be erased AGAIN !    https://iwf.sport/2024/12/03/iwf-executive-board-meeting-in-manama-brn-december-2-3-main-decisions/   I think that was a good decision, 10 weights was too much. but erasing the current World Records was the down side of this decision.   but does this mean they have some agreements with IOC to have all these weights at the Olympics ? that looks unlikely though  but looking at the numbers and the gap between weights none of them look like a "non-Olympic weight" at least that's what IWF thinks.
