40 years ago the 19th July 1980 started the Moscow 1980 Olympics

 

Famous also due to the boycott of the so-called western world

 

Former Czechoslovakia as a one of the most "devoted" ex-USSR satelite state send a huge delegation of 211 athletes (the biggest in history 163+48) including also the biggest amount of Slovak athletes in the history of TCH olympic appearances (49 = 30+19)

 

Since the games were ultra important for the USSR they were kinda highly followed in the former Czechoslovakia as well.

 

But the results were not very satisfying and the result of "our" delegation was considered as failure, especially because from the 14 medals we won only 2 golds. (the legendary Ota Zaremba in Weightlifting andTCH football team) this was and is the only summer olympics team sport gold medal Czechoslovakia ever won and until Nagano 1998 Czech Rep. Ice Hockey triumph the only Olympic team sport gold for athletes from both Czechos-slovakian parts.

The only gold medal Czechoslovakia won in any Olympic team sports during its existence.

 

and in the category of the most WTF random apparences, Czechoslovakia Womens Field Hockey team who competed in Moscow and won silver losing only to the gold medalist Zimbabwe. A sport that basically inexistant in the country received a wild card because of many returning quotas from boycotting NOC´s arrived and won inexplicable silver (Denmark football EURO 1992 prequel lol)

 

3 Slovak girls were part of the team. Viera Podhányiová (the left GK in the front row), Iveta Šranková and Alena Kyselicová (both from the right in the second row)

Moscow 1980 was also the hottest Summer OG based on average temperature IIRC.

 

This was a disappointing Games for Poland. We "only" won 3 gold medals and a bucketload of silvers and bronzes (14 + 15).

 

At least Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz told the comrades to fuck off in a stylish way after winning the pole vault gold on July 30th.

Yeah, people in the West forget that in the early days of doping, (ie post Montreal 76) the other East European nations also fell a long way behind CCCP & DDR.

Combat sports was the biggest letdown - we won 5 silvers in Greco-Roman wrestling and 4 bronzes in boxing. That was bad by our standards from the 60s and 70s.

 

Biggest letdown in athletics was then 100m hurdles WR holder Grazyna Rabsztyn only finishing 5th. She bettered her own WR literally five weeks before the Games (it took Donkova six more years to beat that WR).

 

We sucked at swimming back then, only send 8 swimmers and somehow won a single bronze medal.
