Surprising gold for Germany, considering that it wasn’t Riethmüller who won it. Sadly Riethmüller seems to have regressed, which probably means that he won’t be the savior for German men’s biathlon. Germany now has won 3 of the last 4 men’s individual races at junior level, which shows that results at this level shouldn’t be overestimated.

I think at this age level the best talents (apart from Giacomel (Italy, 2000), Bionaz (Italy, 2000) and Andersen (Norway, 1999)) are Cisar (Slovenia, 2000), Claude (France, 1999) and Perrot (France, 2001).

Great performance from Lipowitz today :yes. Riehtmueller looked good on skis, but to many misses for a medal.

The Rest of the German team, especially in the Youth Category, looked not that well.

But in the sprints everything could be really different ...

Interesting take. Riethmüller doesn’t seem to have improved in skiing from last year, which is a bad sign. Today multiple younger guys (Zingerle, Perrot) had better skiing times than him. Also at the youth level there was a german guy who finished 5th (and would have won gold with one less miss), much better than Riethmüller. On the women’s side Grotian had a top 5 skiing time despite being 2 years younger than many of her competitors.

Congrats to todays winners:

Youth Women Sprint:

Repinc - :SLO

Zingerle - :ITA

Grotian - :GER

6 shot clean, with all 60 who qualified for the Pursuit within in 3:16 of each other.

For the Youth Men Sprint:

Irodov - :RUS

Piller Cottrer - :ITA

Gunka - :POL

Only three shot clean.  With 2:57 between the 1st and 60th.  The US managed to get all 4 in the Pursuit.  That was a surprise to me.  Campbell Wright missed 5 targets and still came in 29th, 1:54 behind.

Already 8 different nations with medals (6 of those already with multiple medals). Norway and Sweden still without medal, so we should definitely get to 10 different nations winning at least one medal. Very impressive race again by Irodov, maybe he can be the first? athlete to win all individual golds. Slovenia has both top end talents (Repinc, Cisar) and good depth, they could definitely finish top 3 in medal table.

Maybe someone from Italy knows if Piller Cottrer is related to the former cross country skier?

Women’s junior sprint:

Gold for Baserga :SUI (0 misses)

Silver for Passler :ITA (1 miss)

Bronze for Arnekleiv :NOR (1 miss)

Goreeva (3 misses) from Russia with superior skiing speed, would have won gold with 1 miss.

May sound harsh, but the German women should all retire as soon as possible. They are so far away when it comes to skiing speed that there is absolutely no hope for them at senior level. I don’t know what the german Coaches do professionally, but they definitely shouldn’t be paid for coaching. I am completely shocked how it is possible that every single athlete is that horrible in cross-country skiing. I doubt that they would be any slower if their coaches would actively try to sabotage them (which already might be the case). Compared to them Janina Hettich looks like a transcendental talent in cross-country skiing.

Super excited for Beserga.  Slettlemark did not start.  Too bad, that was the last solid chance for Greenland to get a medal.  Her brother will start 1:42 back in the pursuit. It would take something really special for that to happen.  So my guess of Greenland will not happen.

    • Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...
    • Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.
