Swimming at the Aquatics FINA World Championships 2017

Brazilian TV has just informed that 17 countries sent a letter to FINA (it is unclear if it was a joint letter or if each country sent a letter of their own) demanding Brazil to be banned from the World Championships before the competition started. I found nothing about it online. Does anybody know if this is really true?

Not countries, federations. Brazil has 27 state federations, 17 of which were apparently against the elections in CBDA. That's why Brazil was at risk of competing under FINA's flag (there's an article about the matter in Swim Vortex).

So it was something within Brazil itself? Wow. Just goes on to show how dirty things still are around here. What a shame. I thought the whole thing was about 17 other national federations, not state federations. Nice to know I was wrong. Thanks, Vini.

Yes, it was something within Brazil, but I'm so used to these cases of corruptions at the federations, that honestly I don't even pay much attention anymore.

Thankfully, the new president of CBDA seems to be taking our sport on the right path...

Spoiler

...I hope :p

What the hell? France got six gold medals! Sure, they were far from great in the pool, but the championships was nearly perfect for them otherwise: first ever medal in diving (and a gold one), four gold medals in open water swimming, they advanced to the finals in 4 of their 5 attempted routines in synchronized swimming, and the women's team advanced to playoffs in water polo. Not bad at all.

i mean for swimming in pool only, not the other events.

Yes, our "golden generation" is gone, now we're really bad (except for Mehdy Metella who looks promising, I hope :fingers:) I don't even think that we have good young swimmers right now who could be the next generation... If we get the OG in 2024 I hope it will galvanize our federation (and some others) like it did for GB for London 2012.

I didn't expect to be this sad to see Camille Lacourt retire :( I'm so happy that he won a gold medal for his last race, a great way to "say goodbye" to swimming :)

Congrats to our local here Farida osman for her outstanding performance in women's 50m butterfly setting world's 8th fastest time ever and 5 new AF in this tournament , but she also could have done much better results especially in 100m butterfly , but anyway her bronze medal was just a dream that came true , for Egyptian swimming it's been a satisfied wch with 5 top10 finishes , but many question marks are on Ahmed Akram performance , all his junior fellows who he topped in YOG and 2015 wch where he finished 4th made such big results here winning silver in men's 800m and silver in men's 1500m , but his level is declining and that was pretty sure in Rio , anyway i'm not waiting for big results to come , as long as these swimmers are 100 % self made with assistant from their American universities , there's no aid from federation or government , no participations in WCs , swimmer like Ahmed Akram didn't take part in any tournament since march when he won bronze medal at 1650 yards in NCAA 2017 getting under American record set by Conor Jaeger

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
