Does anyone know why Belgium could compete in the men's relay yesterday? Is it because Michael Rösch got a sub-150 points and qualified or are there more additional rules?

I believe it's because Belgium, having been ranked above 30th in the Nations cup last year, were eligible to start 2 and register 4 athletes. The World Champs level for qualifying points must be much lower (we saw Turkey and Greece, for example) so they managed to find 4 athletes who qualified, probably by virtue of last year's results or this year's IBU cups. The wildcard allocation for the championships really confused me though. China did pretty well in the early IBU Cups, yet they get no spots. Turkey, however, gets two.

I very strongly disagree that the required points must be lower (ie the standards must be stricter), I very much like it to see athletes we don't normally see in World Cups :)

Thanks for the explanation, I hadn't thought about the Nations Cup yet.

I don't disagree with you on that at all. In fact I prefer it when each nation can send 4 athletes. But the wildcard system did confuse me in how it's allocated- again the IBU is not transparent in its lists for qualifying points or how it determines these things.

True...especially about the list for qualifying points. I mean, how many points you get is determined, amongst others, by the number of points of the other competitors in the race, but it's like this list of points is "secret"..

To take my Brazilians as example once more: in order to know whether or not they're on track to reach the individual requirements to qualify for WCh/Olympics, I have to manually keep track of their IBU points for every competition and manually work out the averages and then hope I did it right and IBU doesn't suddenly come up with a much higher number.

Oh IBU :spank: You're better than this..

Speaking of which. I'd love to sponsor them. Except I don't have money or a company. So I guess pass on to them that they have my support? (Come on Pyongchang! ! !)

Considering they absolutely love any support, I have no doubt they'll be happy to hear they have support from the Czech Republic :d

Yeah, money is a real issue, but the Brazilian snow sports federation is (according to the 2 biathletes I know) one of the best sports federations in South America, so they're helping as much as they can. By the way, for years I had the thought in my mind of "One day I will spend some of the money I won with sports betting to help some athletes from small nations" :p

Now I know Brazil is not small, but of course in biathlon they are. Considering that (and mostly the fact that they are close friends of mine by now) I'm sponsoring some relatively smaller things. For example, I'm paying the gym membership for one of them so for the first time she can train in the gym all off-season instead of only in the few weeks in European training camps. This leads to a summer of 2 trainings per day (one rollerski training + one gym training session), which doubles last summer's training effort and should very much increase next season's results.

Nevertheless it's still a real issue, mostly because finding sponsors in Brazil for biathlon is nearly impossible (I mean...biathlon? Snow? What? :p ).

Results of the men's individual at the Open European Junior Championships today:

Pay attention to the last place finisher, Kyriakos Kiouras of Greece. He literally missed every single of his 20 shots and finished 38 minutes behind the winner :yikes:

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
