For the men China (2), Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong (2), Japan (2), South Korea (2), Qatar and Singapore have athletes in the top 22.

 

The five region tournament quotas would go to Chinese Taipei, Singapore, India, Saudi Arabia and Iran and the six overall quotas, assuming top seeds win will go to India, Iran, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Overall nothing has changed.

 

For the women China (2), Chinese Taipei (2), Hong Kong (2), Japan (2), North Korea, South Korea (2) and Singapore (2) have athletes in the top 22.

 

The five region tournament quotas would go to North Korea, Thailand, India, Lebanon and Uzbekistan and the six overall quotas, assuming top seeds win will go to Thailand, India, Iran, Indonesia (2) and Kazakhstan. Overall the strength of the field remains unchanged.

 

Asia knew the current format put its weaker nations at a disadvantage so it changed its own qualification format to essentially match it with 2012.

Thanks, that was very interesting, I was thinking about the same thing. this makes more sense to qualify top athletes from ranking before continental tournaments

 

but there is a bit difference here, back in 2012 even the 3rd athlete (for team event) had to qualify as individual (despite not being eligible to participate in singles event), which means top Asian nations still took 1 spot each for their 3rd player in Asian qualification tournament,

You are correct. I think the ITTF was right in capping the individual quotas to two per nation for this Olympics though. With the way Asia restructured its qualifiers it wouldn't have mattered whether or not the world rankings had higher priority, but the current format no doubt would have benefited European nations and would have increased the overall strength of the field had it gone as intended (though regardless all the top athletes would have made it, nation caps ignored).

If both Hong Kong players withdraw the quota later as expected (which will happen 99%) the following countries qualified for Rio in men's singles
