Mexico City 2017 World Championships postponed

 

 

 

Following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake the IPC has postponed upcoming World Championships in powerlifting and swimming.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has postponed the World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships which were due to begin in Mexico City on 30 September following Tuesday’s (19 September) devastating earthquake in the country. The decision was taken following an assessment of the current situation and after close liaison with the Local Organising Committee and the City of Mexico government.

Tuesday’s 7.1 magnitude quake has left hundreds dead and caused major damage to buildings and infrastructure in Mexico City and the surrounding area. Although the two venues that were set to host the Championships – the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool and the adjacent Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium – appear to have sustained only minor damage, a full structural assessment needs to be conducted. In addition some of the hotels set to accommodate athletes and related infrastructure have been badly damaged.

Around 1,400 athletes, officials and staff were due to be in Mexico City for the 2017 Para Sport Festival which was to feature both the World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships between 30 September and 6 October. A small number of team delegations had already arrived in the city for training camps ahead of the event and all have indicated they are safe following Tuesday’s earthquake.

Andrew Parsons, IPC President, said: “Following the terrible earthquake our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with the people of Mexico at this time. The tragic loss of life and devastation caused is heart breaking to see and our deepest sympathies are with all those involved.

“As a result of this tragedy, we are in full agreement that the immediate focus of the Mexican authorities should be on prioritising recovery and rebuilding for the Mexican people and not organising two major international sport events. Therefore, we have agreed with the Local Organising Committee and City of Mexico government to postpone the upcoming World Championships in Para swimming and Para powerlifting until further notice.

“I know the postponement of both Championships will be disappointing news to all the athletes who were set to take part, however these are unique circumstances and quite simply this is the right thing to do at the moment.

“Our immediate priority now is to work with the team delegations currently in Mexico City to ensure their safe departure. We will then assess whether we can reorganise these Championships in the near future in Mexico City or seek alternatives.”

This is the first time the IPC has had to postpone a major Championships in its history.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that the World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships that were postponed last month due to an earthquake in Mexico City have been rescheduled. Both Championships, which form part of the 2017 Para Sport Festival, will now take place between 27 November and 7 December.

The decision to reschedule both Championships was taken following extensive dialogue and assurances from the Local Organising Committee and City of Mexico, as well as consultation with the IPC membership.

Around 1,400 athletes, officials and staff were originally set to take part in the Championships which were scheduled for 30 September and 6 October at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool and the adjacent Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium. Following the IPC’s announcement of the new dates, competing nations have until Sunday (8 October) to register their teams to compete later this year.

Andrew Parsons, IPC President, said: “I would like to thank the IPC membership for their understanding and patience as we dealt with what was an unprecedented situation for the Paralympic Movement. I would also like to thank the whole Paralympic Movement for their support of the people of Mexico following the tragic earthquakes last month.

“After extensive dialogue, it is clear that both the Local Organising Committee and City Mexico are eager and very passionate about rescheduling the 2017 Para Sport Festival. They want to show to the world that Mexico City is open and that life and business is continuing. At the same time, the feedback from the IPC membership is that they are keen for the Championships to go ahead.

“After carrying out all of the necessary safety checks on the venues, team hotels and all related infrastructure, we have decided to reschedule the Championships for two months later than originally planned.

“We appreciate that the new dates may not suit all athletes and teams. However, we feel it is important to put on the 2017 Para Sport Festival in order to further show our support to the people of Mexico City and give all of those athletes that have spent the year training for this event the opportunity to compete at the very highest level.

“We can now look forward with great excitement to the world’s best powerlifters and swimmers going head-to-head for world titles later this year.”

Following last month’s earthquakes, the IPC and Agitos Foundation launched a global fundraising campaign to support UNICEF’s humanitarian efforts in Mexico. To date nearly USD 40,000 has been raised.

African Sitting Volleyball Championships 2017 have concluded in Kigali, Rwanda.

 

The Men's Tournament saw Egypt beat Rwanda in the final to take gold and Morocco beat Algeria to win bronze.

This means that the following nations have qualified for the 2018 Sitting Volleyball Championships, the first stage of Paralympic Qualification:

 

On the Women's side the gold medal match saw a reversal of fortunes, with Rwanda beating Egypt to claim gold. Kenya beat Congo DR to claim the bronze.
