Isn't a chaperone someone from the organization of the event who accompanies them to see the urine come out of wherever urine should come out of? Not someone from their own team as far as I know? :p

I don't think it's a problem, this is a swimming qualification thread and there's no doubt other qualifiers for large nations will be talked about (we already did it for France). Honestly for a sport

To be honest, I don't think I have ever heard about chaperone. :p

I know there are people who wear things saying "Chaperone" on the back who accompany athletes to doping tests to watch them pee, but of course they are provided by the organization/WADA/NADO etc, not people who travel together with the team from Sierra Leone to the Olympics :p

So their job is to watch athletes when they pee? Wow, I wonder what's their paycheck.

A chaperone is someone who watches someone overall. This could be due to her age (she's 18) or her religion (Sierra Leone majority are Muslim, though usually it would be with a man) or perhaps for safety if she hasn't done much international travel.

Yes. To be quite literal: they have to check to see if the urine actually comes out of the "opening" we humans have for that, in order to make sure there is no cheating with stuff like hidden fake urine :p

Yeah I think I'm just weighing the word "chaperone" too much in respect to having something to do with doping control. I think indeed it's just to watch over her, which is quite understandable for basically all reasons you give.

If you read the Olympic Reports before the 1960's many delegations had a certain number of chaperones for their female athletes. I believe it was to ensure the ladies will behave properly and no man would take advantage of them.

To be honest, I think that's a good idea. Not so much the check to see if they "behave properly", but the last part. I mean, she's an 18-year old girl from Sierra Leone who maybe barely ever gets outside the country except for championships and then all of a sudden she'll be in the middle of an Olympic village absolutely full with male athletes who's hormones are raging like crazy after months of testosteron build-up towards the competitions.

 

Yeah, I think sending someone to take care of her is a good idea :p

Great job :d

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

      I remember when I was a child and I was on holiday with my parents in Tunisia, I think in 1999? We were on a trip to the desert near the border with Algeria. The guide said something like that: Algeria is a few minutes from here but we won't go there because there is a war going on there and it's not safe.

      Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.

      MId-1962.  Almost all the Jews were driven out in a few days, even though they had been living there since Classical, pre-Muslim times.   Perhaps our friend could give us details of of any current Algerian plans to welcome them back, restore their property, guarantee their safety etc etc?

      There are still many people of Jewish origin in Central and Eastern Europe who have nothing to do with the state of Israel. What ties does Zelensky have to the state of Israel? Apart from he waś there as president of Ukraine and speaking in the Knesset? Nothing. In the power circles in Moscow there were/are many people of Jewish origin and what about that? A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?

      I`m a bit disappointed with the starts of the Italian team. I was counting on progress from last year. And here it looks like Bagnis is still very uneven. In Cortina there will be 3 competitions with medals to win and it would be a shame not to use our track to win 1-2 medals. The same goes for luge.

      On the other hand Errani's serve doesn't make Paolini's task any easier... But Paolini is in a such good shape here, though, that I hope she wins her first title in the old Fed Cup. For Errani, it will be 4: 2009, 2010, 2013. So far, Roberta Vinci has 4 titles with Italy.
