The Irish equestrian team for the Olympics has been announced and the big news is that the dressage team has been withdrawn :(

At most they can only hope to receive a reallocated quota in individual dressage but it's not certain either. We were never going to trouble the medals anyway but it's sad that our historic first team dressage qualification has come to this.

However, the showjumping and eventing squads have been named....meet the team :)

JUMPING:

Bertram Allen with Pacino Amiro

Darragh Kenny with VDL Cartello

Cian O’Connor with Kilkenny

Reserves:

Shane Sweetnam with Karlin Van’t Vennehof

Michael Duffy with Zilton SL Z (

EVENTING:

Cathal Daniels with Rioghan Rua

Sarah Ennis with Horseware Woodcourt Garrison

Sam Watson with Tullabeg Flamenco

Reserves:

QUALIFICATION UPDATE

Updated after the official confirmation today that triathletes Carolyn Hayes and Russell White have qualified for the Olympics and have been selected for Team Ireland.

At the Irish Performance Meet in Dublin, Ellen Walshe became the latest swimmer to achieve the OQT standard with her new national record in the women's 200m individual medley. Her selection is not yet certain though as the Swim Ireland selection policy stated that only swimmers who went within 1.5% of the OQT standard at the nationals in April would be eligible to qualify from this meet. However, it is most likely they won't stick strictly to that policy as Ellen went comfortably inside the FINA A time today. Either way she is eligible for a quota until Swim Ireland says otherwise so we will put her into the qualified basket for now.

That means we now have broken the 100 mark (!!!) in terms of athlete quotas (54 men and 46 women) with representatives in 56 events, across 20 different sports.

Before the world ranking qualifications close on Tuesday night, the following Irish athletes look to be safely inside the quota places and should be on the plane to Tokyo:

  • Leon Reid (Men's 200m - though it’s uncertain yet if he will be selected)
  • David Kenny (Men's 20km Walk)
  • Phil Healy (Women's 200m)
  • Nadia Power (Women's 800m)
  • Sarah Healy (Women's 1500m)
  • Sarah Lavin (Women's 100m Hurdles)

Then we have a group of athletes where it is touch and go whether they will make the cut:

  • Marcus Lawler (Men's 200m - not in good form but looking like he might scrape into the quota places, but it will go down to the wire)
  • Mark English (Men's 800m - hanging on to one of the last quota places but has one final chance of getting an Auto Q on Tuesday in Spain)
  • Andrew Coscoran (Men's 1500m - currently in 42nd with only 45 making the cut. He has a last ditch attempt to make the Auto Q in Lucerne on Tuesday but that also means other rivals will also be chasing the Auto Q time. I have a feeling he will just make it but it could go either way)
  • Phil Healy (Women's 400m - obviously not a disaster for her if she doesn't make it since she will have the 200m and the mixed relay to fall back on. She is currently hanging on for a place in the 400m but could be overtaken once the rankings are updated).
  • Síofra Cléirigh-Buttner (Women's 800m)
  • Louise Shanahan (Women's 800m - both Síofra and Louise seem to have edged out their compatriot Georgie Hartigan for the qualifying places but they are far from safe and both were on either side of the cut-off line before this weekend. It's too close to call at the moment. There could be re-allocations which could help their cause if some nations and athletes decline their quota but still it is not going to be clear until the very last moment).

There are a couple more with a faint glimmer of home (example: Tobin, Hartigan, O'Connor - needs withdrawals above her) but really I think the remaining quotas will come from the list above.

For the mixed 4x400m relay, it looks like Cillín Greene and Chris O'Donnell are odds on to make the team as well as Phil Healy. The other 3 places are still up in the air.

There’s only 4 places for the relay. Not 6. There’ll be non-quota alternates named probably but they won’t be part of the official squad

Oh yes I forgot about that. Though on the coverage of the nationals Derval O’Rourke and Rob Heffernan were talking about 3 places up for grabs for men and women so they confused me as well :d

Can you name 4 and pick two more that have qualified for individual events?

    • Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...
    • Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.
