Milano Cortina 2026 - General Discussion

Recommended Posts

Ok, not our best day today... Congrats to Oliver Martin for getting 4th in Big Air Snowboard.

Tomorrow...

Gotta wake up for the Women's DH at 05:30.  Can Vonn (or Johnson) (or both) pull it off?

Biathlon mixed relay at 08:05 - Who knows?  Can this be the time?

PGS at 08:26 (but I don't think we're favored at all)

08:35 - Curling vs. :EST - can we rebound?

Casey Dawson in the M 5000 at 10:00 (my church service should be over by the time Dawson skates!) :)

Luge final run at 12:34, if USA can inch closer...

13:05 - Curling vs. :SWE

13:30 - Pairs Skating (maybe we can not get last?)

14:45 - Women's Skating (Amber or Alysa...who will it be?)

then 15:55 - Can Ilia (surely it will be Ilia) bring us Gold in the Team Event?

06:30 - W Freeski Slopestyle final, Avery Krumme

08:00 - M Alpine Combined - Slalom - River Radamus

11:30 - W Speed Skating 1000m - Erin Jackson and Brittany Bowe - C'mon ladies!

Check in on W Luge (I went out on a limb to predict USA gold here... we'll see...)

12:05 - Curling vs. TBD

13:20 - Chock and Bates in the individual

13:30 - W Snowboard Big Air (no entries)

14:12 - M Jumping NH - Jason Colby surprise?

14:40 - W Hockey vs. :SUI

I'll be up at 5:45 for the cross country, I want to be up for the quarterfinals.  Definitely might need a mid-day nap at some point and of course we have the curling gold medal match!

OK, I do not want to be the downer and generally I am more an optimist with life.  However, these winter games are shaping up like Deja-Vu all over again.  It is uncanny how our athletes consistently fold under the pressure of the games.  Thoughts on why?  Is there really more pressure here than opposed to other countries?  It seams to be across multiple sports so cannot attribute to a specific program training/leadership.  Its also not others are just rising up to the top.  We struggle to just perform at our "normal" level.  I too like everyone had big hopes for today but well....Ogden was a nice surprise in the midst of the misery.

Thoughts?

Was it really misery?? Sure, we didn't win a gold in the morning, but Ogden was a great surprise with silver. Hall won silver in slopestyle. We weren't runaway favorites in that competition going into it. We have a chance to medal in luge. We are in the gold medal match in curling. Only disappointment was Shiffrin today.

I think it's more of an individual athlete problem rather than a country-wide problem.

Today was a pretty good day.  Some surprises for good, and some for bad.  The biggest spoiler was the Shiffrin/Johnson non-medal.  (She was 15th in the slalom!)

Of course would have loved the gold in curling, but hats off to the duo.  :)

And how about Ogden! Not on my radar at all.

Also happy about picking up a luge medal.

Finally, glad about our men skaters (all 3) - But for our medal chance's sake, I'm glad Ilia hit his routine.

Tomorrow - Not quite as action-packed, but hopefully 2 golds to come!

04:00 Nordic Combined NH Jumping (but we're not major contenders)

05:30 M Super G (Will RCS and others be on?)

07:45 Nordic Combined Cross Country

08:15 Biathlon W 15km Individual - It's a long shot for us again

08:15 W Moguls Finals (the last Quali is at 05:00 - we have some contenders)

11:00ff - Women's and then Men's Doubles Luge - I've got hopes for our Women! (Run 2 starts at 12:53)

12:30 Jordan Stolz in the 1000m

Men's Curling vs. :CZE starts at 13:05

13:30 - Chock and Bates for the gold, please!

    • Good start for us with 3 total medals so far.    Angel Rusev took his 6th straight European title.   With this he equals Yoto Yotov and passed a bunch of other Bulgarian legends who have 5.  Above him are Nikolay Peshalov with 8th and Naim Süleymanoğlu with 7th (there could be others with such records, but i don't have the full statistics).   A shame that Rusev's overall level isn't on par on a worldwide scale, but we all know that Europe has practically taken a backseat in weightlifting the past 20 years, with the exception of a few individuals.

    • Looks like i severely overestimated the intelligence of the average Bulgarian.. Tragic result, but will see what happens now. Initial stance last night was that there won't be any EU blockage, but we will be "standing our ground on Bulgaria's interests", whatever that means. The campaign and the whole election cycle was more towards our domestic problems, corruption and status quo. There wasn't much foreign rhetoric, even though everyone knows Radev's position.   It's basically wait and see at this point. Like i mentioned before, this guy isn't as bombastic as Orban, but more tactical and cunning, so i don't expect fireworks in front of whole Europe.

    • To give some insight into how ridiculous Angharad's time was, the mixed relay that includes her, the infamous female breaststroker, is one second quicker than the four that includes Adam ****ing Peaty.   It's VERY rare your quickest mixed 4 includes your female breaststroker - the slowest stroke also creates, generally the biggest 'sex' gap. But if your male stroker is relatively very weak (think USA Tokyo 2020) it can be explained.   When your male stroker is Adam Peaty, backed up by Filip Nowacki, its insane.
    • Doesn't seem to be major changes.   Section 3.B has been updated in relation to the host nation quota to introduce 'eligible' into the criteria. In the new version, 'if the host country has not already qualified an athlete, the highest-placed host country eligible athlete based on the final results of the Olympic Games 2028 Qualification Event will directly obtain a quota place. If the host country has already had one or two athletes qualify via alternate pathways, the host country quota position will not be granted and will be reallocated.'   There is also a change to section F1 and F2 to introduce gender criteria - 'If an allocated quota place is not confirmed by the NOC by the confirmation of quota places deadline, or is declined by the NOC, the quota place will be reallocated to the next highest placed eligible athlete not yet qualified of the same gender from the same qualification event where the quota place was allocated , adhering to the maximum number of quota places per NOC, as outlined above (B.2).'
