I don't think there will be many surprises this time.

:ITA should win the gold easily. And two teams from :SRB, :TUR, and :BRA should complete the podium.

Perhaps :CHN or :USA could surprise. Considering the quarterfinal matchups, I'm not confident in :POL or :JPN chances.

No Van Ryk, Gray, or Brie for us here either, so guess I won’t be watching :rolleyes:

Now now, who are you kidding :p

But Canada not having some of their best players is good news for us, i guess. After all this match will decide the second place in the group. We will also be without our captain Elitsa Atanasijevic and Radostina Marinova.

Italy without: Pietrini, Lubian, Bonifacio (all the refused NT) and Degradi, Nwakalor (injured).

Italy is the favourite, but we won't be dominant as we were last year at the Olympics. I have a feeling Brazil will ultimately take gold.

Caterina Bosetti was not selected because coach Julio Velasco wanted to look for a younger starter as outside hitter. Alice Degradi was the starter in the VNL, but she is injured and won't be at the World Championship (she is a talented but unlucky player, as she also missed the Olympics last year for the same reason). Elena Pietrini, who was briefly a starter under Velasco's predecessor, Davide Mazzanti, has struggled with injuries for a long time and was among the players who declined the call-up to the national team.

Stella Nervini will probably be the starter. She is definitely talented, but has very little experience at this level of competition.

Also, we will miss Chirichella, Lubian and Bonifacio, three middle blockers who are the best alternatives to the starting duo of Fahr and Danesi.

It's still a strong team, but we definitely won't be cruising to the title with a string of 3-0 wins like last year in Paris.

There's only one change in the starting lineup from 2024: Nervini for Bosetti. Bosetti had a very poor season in Turkey, especially offensively and has always had significant limitations – at 179 cm heigh. Nervini doesn't necessarily have to be a weakness in this team – he's only 22, but the rest of the starting lineup is experienced: de Gennaro, Sylla, Danesi, Orro and Egonu. I believe Brazil is more weaknes due to the absence of Ana Cristina.

Oh I didn't mean to belittle Nervini in any way, I think she's very talented. I was just pointing out that her approach to her first major tournament as a starter is a bit of a question mark, just like it would be for anyone else.

It is true that Bosetti did not have a stellar season, but she played the best volleyball of her career in Paris, so I don't know if Nervini (or Giovannini, whom I like) will be able to replicate that.

I'm also a bit worried about the absence of the middle blocker backups. Not because any of them is better than Fahr or Danesi, but just because, in such a tournament, you never know if you need to resort to the subs. I would have felt more comfortable with Lubian or Chirichella coming off the bench.

Omoruyi was a great junior talent and maybe she'll finally start playing up to expectations? In MB's case, we must to hope that Fahr and Danesi will be healthy: fortunately the first two group matches will be against weaker opponents, so there won't be many difficult matches (if they're playing for medals, that will 7).
