Athletics WA Under 20 World Championships 2024

Recommended Posts

I'm glad that Teršek won, but I hopped for a throw closer to 80m. Still first Slovenian gold medalist after Cankar 30 years ago. Javelin isn't easy and to be able to throw 80m at 17 shows he has promise to go a lot further. Fingers crossed he makes it.

Also good result for Cyprus in men's hammer. Crazy good throw that one.

I don't know if we're taking this championship less seriously? Because our results are terrible... I have a déjà vu from our performances at the senior World Championships 10-15 years ago. It's a bit strange, because among the seniors we attack with a wide bench, the U-18 European Championships this year went great for us, and here we have 1x 6th place and that's it. It's a bit worrying...

it's just this age group...the only star is Furlani, but after the Olympic bronze medal it doesn't make sense for him to compete at junior level once again

meanwhile the best cadets are still too young to shine at the higher level...not to mention the 2009 sprinters (Doualla above all), who are not even eligible to take part in the junior competitions

in 2 years time, I'm sure we will have a better team, meanwhile this year let's hope that the usual suspects in race walking save us from "0 tituli"

tbh, better be invisible at junior level and become medal contenders later among the seniors than viceversa

We have 1 bronze, but it's not even about the medals. 2 years ago we won 2 medals: 1 gold and 1 bronze but we were 12th in the points classification with 38 points. Now, before the last day, we won't have even half of that achievement. Something is wrong, because 2/3 of our athletes are starting badly here and are completely out of shape. I don't understand why, because under the new management of Fidal we did well, which is visible in both seniors and juniors results. This year at the U-18 European Championships we won the medal classification, when I`m surprised by the terrible performance in Lima. And it's not even about whether Furalni would have won an additional gold here or not. The facts are that we sent a large team, which is doing badly for the most part and this is probably the 1st such big mistake since the new president of the our federation.

Same with :GBR, after three other major events this year there was definitely a loss of focus for this one.

Järvinen and Trościanka very impressive. A shame Gräber could not compete. +8000 u20 decathletes tend to fare quite well later so this is a good sign for the future of the sport if this was still needed.

    • answering the call with some decent entries & sneaking in a few newbies as well.     Men Hamish Kerr (High Jump) Tom Walsh (Shot Put) Jacko Gill (Shot Put) Tiaan Whelpton (60m) Women Maddi Wesche (Shot Put) Kaia Tupu-South (Shot Put) Zoe Hobbs (60m) Olivia McTaggart (Pole Vault) Imogen Ayris (Pole Vault) Maia Ramsden (1500m) Laura Nagel (1500m) Alison Andrews-Paul (800m)
    • Full breakdown of the current entry status here.  As you can see, they are short of numbers in pretty much every discipline, so I imagine there's lots of e-mailing going on to get some decent entry lists.  All a bit ironic, because usually in  it is spectators that are hard to find.  But the usual solutions - free tickets to the PLA, and local schoolkids - won't work here.      Road To | World Athletics
    • Since it's already a week later, I think it's safe to assume @Wanderer and @Belle are both not interested in organizing the contest (to be clear: no judgement, anyone can be busy, just not have the time or motivation to do so or any other reason, no worries)?
    • Belarus has only itself to blame for taking part in Putin's war, even though it got nothing out of it. Other countries from the former USSR didn`t take part in this war and are not subject to any sanctions, e.g. Kazakhstan, Georgia, etc. This simply shows that Belarus is no longer an independent country, but a part of Russia, because Lukashenko makes decisions in line with the interests of Russia, not his own country. In addition, many athletes from BLR play under a neutral flag, e.g. Sabalenka is even No. 1 in women's tennis
    • This is definitely something that should be looked at. Doping enhances your performance, so does messing with equipment. Like in cross-country skiing: if your skis are positive for fluor, you get a DQ for that competition, but that's it (or you can even have them tested before the race and have no punishment at all, like two of the Brazilians in the Trondheim world championships having their skis test positive, likely due to using fluor in a race in January where it was announced there would not be a fluor test). If your urine tests positive for EPO, the problem is significantly bigger.
    • Both massive state-sponsored doping and the whole war thing are a bit of a different situation than this Norway ski jumping case, to be fair. I'm going to assume the Norwegian prime minister or king wasn't involved in these decisions.
    • Yes, ok, but what are the exact things Austria is supposed to be cheating with? We know what the Norwegians did, including video evidence, so what about the Austrians other than "but they do it too!"?
    • Sure, i assume that it was known. To be true how we can imagine the opposite? Fooling ourselves? Because they are Norwegian? Would we all be so cautious about Kenyans? And hey, in a way i think the same. How can you prove that every punished Russian athlete knew about the war? Supports it? What is the diffference? And what about Belarus athletes? For what they are punished? So if you cant prove anything to almost any Belarus athlete and we still punish them why not do it with rich ones 🙂. We have to decide wheather we punish all countries or only some. If not the whole country ok, whole nordic ski. How would it differ from Belarus punishment?🙂
    • For now, it must be proven that the entire Norwegian staff, athletes etc. knew about it, and not, for example, 1-2 people. Then, appropriate penal regulations can be introduced, but they still will not be able to be retroactive. There is no such thing in the law that someone has to prove their innocence - it's exactly the opposite- it`s he who must be proven guilty.
    • Because they knew it all, they had to see it. If their whole system was a cheat they were conscious parts of this. So why some Russian athletes can pay the price of the whole system and Norwegian not. Sure, how to punish Norwegian sport is to discus but in general, like with Russia. With some small individual exclusions if proven that athlete is clear. I mean that we should use similar methods. If there is sexual harrasment in whole crew guys know it. Are they guilty? Imo yes. Just example.
