Today I'll watch :POR VS :ARG. Too bad it's U23s I would rather watch the senior squad but I still have a feeling it would be a great match

Not sure about that.... Portuguese team at least is made 80% of players that never had a spot in a national team (the portuguese teams didn't let the good young players play the Olympics...)

Still, it's the first time Portugal is in an Olympic tournament since 2004, so I hope they can at least perform a decent match :):fingers:

Can you tell me the reason, if you know it, why Ronaldo is not playing at the olympics, since the rule that, I think bu not sure, 1 member of senior squad can play

For Ronaldo is easy:

- besides the fact the team would never allow him to play (he has competitions where he needs to play in Real Madrid);

-  besides the fact he just played for a month in Euro 2016 until the final;

-  and besides the fact he is injured;

our coach would never even call him. Why? Because (and I agree with this policy) our national olympic coach built a team (a young team) since 2/3 years ago, with which he intended to play the Euro U-21 (he ended 2nd) and to play the Olympics.

It was a good idea, as we had a great team, but when the time for calling the players for Rio, some players were unavailable due to their participation in Euro 2016, and the rest of them were just forbidden to join the olympics by their own clubs.:thumbdown:

It was such a riddiculous thing that by the time our coach was announcing the players for Rio, he received a SMS from a team denying one of his players.... :wall:

Hopefully :IRQ will be a positive surprise in the men's olympic tournament.

My favourite Volleyball position: LIBERO. You ask why? Look here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyIOarNAONk

i don't know how Nigeria and Cameroon didn't qualify to women's football ,they'd have been much better representatives than SA and Zimbabwe especially the last one , although SA did a brave fight against Sweden and their goalkeeper just gifted them a goal , they're much lacking the way to create a real chance to score , despite having some pretty individual skills

Zimbabwe qualified over Cameroon due to the away goal rule. Nigeria didn't even reach the final round, losing to Equatorial Guinea after extra time. Equatorial Guinea also has a decent team (better than South Africa, who you said isn't that bad) and it would have been great to see them here.

I wonder if FIFA will decrease the spot for Africa next games, giving them 1.5 spots and having them play an intercontinental match against the second place team from Asia (they will only have one spot since Japan will be hosts)

    • @hckošice Do you agree with me to some extent, or am I hopelessly dreaming?
    • Interesting forecasts, I like 'em! I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.    Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th   Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other. Of course reality with differ significantly
    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
    • Never wanted a prediction to be more right
    • Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings.     will beat  and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.    will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.     Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.   Home team of  will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.
