Smart choice. Steenbergen would be at a big disadvantage if she did 6 x 200s before the 100 free.

Her 2023 World Championship schedule was nuts:

4x 50m Freestyle (Including swim off)

3x 100m Freestyle

3x 200m Freestyle

3x 200m IM

2x 4x100m Freestyle Relay

2x 4x200m Freestyle Relay

2x 4x100m Medley Relay

2x Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay

So that's 2.7km of swimming in 21 races. Dropping the 200 free is definitely the right move.

Being from a country where you have to swim relay prelims is such a huge disadvantage. Just ask Sjostrom.  It's a huge shame Marrit didn't get back on track until after Ranomi and Femke retired.

Still can´t forgive the coaches making Sjöström waste too much energy in the relays in Rio with not to bad rankings but still with no chance of medals, compared to what she might have lost in the individual races. She was good enough for more than 1 gold-1 silver- 1 bronze that olympics.

The medal chances might be slightly higher in relays this time but she is still a too good team mate so she will race the relays this time too instead of doing the same distance in individual instead.
