The thing is BWF wants to have a group stage (unlike other racket sports) and they can't fix the number of groups in because of the variable number of players in singles.

What they can fix is the grouping conditions such as giving group of fours to lowest seeded players or making the bye positions flexible.

the answer to that is a limited number of runners-up qualifying for a last 16. if you have a weird number of players, even better. start on the basis of 12 groups of 4, with groups adjusted to 3 for having less than 48 players. 12 group winners, 12 seeds. from there there are any number of ways to get to 16.

in this case : 41 = 5 groups of 4, 7 groups of three. Put top 5 seeds in groups of 4. GRoups of three, winners progress. Groups of 4 winners progress and runners up progress- the two lowesr ranked runners up play for the last, last 16 place (which mathematically can never be 1 and 2 seed)

Second Frnech pair has been included and the men's doubles draw will be tomorrow.

And not a single regulation is updated except making one group to have 5 pairs instead of 4. Bravo

Group D is an absolute minefield in Men's Doubles. Just shows what one extra space does to the probability while drawing.

Due to a doping offense, to be clear...

I just can't....three missed tests, how the fuck do you do that if you're a genuine professional? You know you're on edge after two missed tests, how do you not check your whereabouts and if necessary update them every single day? I'd do it 5 times a day and wouldn't stop being anxious until at least one missed test is more than 12 months ago again....

Who gets their spot?

Edit: just read the rest of the article, nobody will replace them because the draw is already made. That's a shitty rule, so if you're one spot out, even someone withdrawing (for whatever reason) way more than a week before it actually starts doesn't get you in, what happened to the lucky loser kind of thing we see in tennis tournaments :hairpull:

    • Juniors were there recently and the track was awful   Although that's not necessarily bad. Tracks don't all need to be fast, a slow track (like the horribly slow one in Poland) simply favors a different style of athletes. Training a lot there doesn't really give much extra advantage though, not like in sliding sports where of course as host country you make sure your athletes know every single meter a year before the Olympics.    And to get back on topic: speed skater Elisa Dul broke her tibia and fibula in a training fall yesterday and will obviously be out of the OQT and so the Olympics.
    • The PSL race in Davos was (yet another) insult to a beautiful discipline. The red course (which was actually yellow) had several holes and an exposed ice sheet, which made the athletes slide way too long, causing DNFs or massive time losses. The only positive note is that Caffont won despite racing on the more dangerous course in the final
