Seven hours until men's 20k race walk which kicks off the athletics programme :bye:

The most interesting part of Olympics is about to start :cheer: But it also means that we are almost in half of the Games :(

Adeleke won’t run in the mixed relay to focus on the individual so that rules Ireland out of a medal tilt in the relays. Disappointing as we come in as European champions but it is what it is, the schedule threw up a headache and there was going to have to be a sacrifice somewhere. Would have liked to see her subbed in if we made a final (though would be a tough ask without her) but seems like that’s been ruled out as well:

Ireland was considered a medal contender? I didn’t even consider them, how were they supposed to beat GB/Netherlands?

They’ve overperformed in relays recently and their time from the European championship is very competitive on the world stage so we weren’t completely without hope.

I’m with you though, I don’t think we have the talent on the men’s side to have won a medal in Paris as the bigger nations start to take the event more seriously.

I’d like Ireland to continue our record of qualifying for the final of every mixed relay we’ve ever entered in major champs but I never believed we would be a medal contender

I just looked at the schedule and I don’t quite understand why she dropped out. In my opinion there would have been more than enough time to recover for her individual event, especially since she can easily get out of heats at 80 % if she is anywhere near her best. Maybe she could have helped them to qualify for the final before deciding to skip it. Her teammates might feel as if she robbed them of a chance to compete in a final. The other Irish runners don’t seem to be good enough  to make an individual final. If she ends up winning the 400 m gold, it will probably all be forgotten.

If she ends winning any medal, it will be forgotten

The team may qualify anyway (it has in previous events).

She had said that she felt “leggy” in the European champs after the mixed final. Kaczmarek who beat her there has already said she’s skipping the mixed relay.
