I really hope Nordic Combined doesn't get scrapped. Actually, I believe the Winter Olympics should keep growing with new sports and disciplines (3x3 Hockey, Ice Cross, Speed Skiing, Ice Climbing), otherwise they won't feel like a true celebration of sports like their summer counterpart.

I'm not quite sure why the IOC is so hung up on the athlete quotas for the winter Olympics, they never got as out of hand as the summer games did. But they are.

Not quite sure what the political machinations are, maybe NC is just the black sheep of FIS for some reason, but they've been on the chopping block for a long time now, and haven't seemed to take the warnings and act on them. Money wise, there is no reason to boot it, they make use of other required facilities and don't really crimp their scheduling.

In fact, well, no. Hockey is extremely physically demanding, I even think it is the most physically demanding winter sport of all.

I mean keeping more than a minute on ice is just cardiac. The shifts are there for a reason.

25 players rosters are absolutely justified. You must have 4 lines to keep the stamina the whole game.

Hard to persuade people who never watched hockey though, I can understand your point, but sadly, the point is wrong

Having played hockey for many years of my childhood, completely agree. ;)

Each shift is absolute torture and playing 20 minutes instead of let’s say 25 makes a real difference to my level of freshness, whether it’s during the ongoing game or later games in a tournament. Same for NHL players.

I'll jump on the off-topic with an unpopular opinion - ice hockey isn't so stamina demanding to justify 25 people rosters. And it doesn't have big playing fields like football or rugby for example, where you'd require so many reserves. 15 field players + 3 goalies should be good. Or 18+3 at max. But 25 is too much imo and the constant substitutes are too much as well.

If it was 21 then they would still need 4 people accredited as injury replacement. And I don’t think it’s useful to play those games where you keep the roster size artificially small but you allow replacements in emergencies.

I'm a bit confused about Germany. The Team Deutschland website says they are sending 12 cross-country skiers to the Olympics but on the FIS website, it shows that they accepted 13 quotas.

This winter Olympics is so weird here, like, half the sports we have representatives we did not have last time, and we have more different sports then all other winter games ever, but unless we will have a huge surprise this will not have any noteworthy results, even top 10 or 15 are a stretch
