:STP Agate De Sousa - Athletics - Women’s Long Jump

She's apparently willing to compete for Portugal. No international participation for São Tomé since 2019 but yet no indication of a transfer of allegiance on her WA page.

it would be nice (and a great story), but I fear it's not gonna happen :dunno:

As far as I could tell, there is no specific thread for this but with the first gold medals, and I didn't think it'd be big enough to open one, so here we go :p

It's not a first medal, since Mauritius :MRI has won one bronze medal in boxing once, but they surprisingly have a shot in women's cycling this year. It's not a huge chance, obviously, but in Tokyo we saw how someone who wasn't even considered on any list of dark horses ended up with the gold due to the Dutch women totally fucking up their tactics, so weird things can always happen :d

Kimberley Le Court Pienaar has been very impressive this year, often fighting at the front of the very biggest one-day races. Again, she is far from being the favourite, but I'd say her chances are significantly bigger than Anna Kiesenhofer's chances were ahead of Tokyo, and we know how well that ended. Definitely worth a mention, the chance exists!

.

While I don’t think she will win a medal (she hasn’t been top 5 in any race this year), she’s a very interesting character. Shes 28 and this is her first ever professional season. Before this year her only races were representing her country

Like I said, she's definitely not a medal favourite, but "she hasn't been top-5 in any race this year" is rather underselling her qualities/performances :d

Since January, every single race she has done from the Deakin University Elite Women's Road Race on (where she finished a more than excellent 9th) has been a big one-day World Tour race, none of those smaller .1 races in between. A very respectable 25th in a tough Strade Bianche, after being in the breakaway for a long time, 11th in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, 9th in De Panne, 13th in Gent-Wevelgem and probably the best of all, 10th in Roubaix after very much being part of the main part of the race at the end. Her weakest race in the past two months was a 23rd in the Tour of Flanders, of all places. That being one's worst result says a lot (in a good sense).

In her entire pre-Olympic career, Anna Kiesenhofer had basically accomplished nothing remotely near to what Pienaar has shown in the past three months alone. Again: that does not make her the (or a) favourite, obviously, but in road racing weird things can happen and she is definitely a contender to keep an eye on, instead of one of the default 'exotic nation riders' who we often see in the first lead group of the world championships.

Chances (+/- realistic) for countries for their first olympic medal in history.

:ALB Abakarov, Dudaev, Valiev (all wrestling)

:AND Doria Villarubla (canoeing slalom)

:BIH Pudar (swimming)

:IVB McMaster (athletics)

:DMA LaFond (athletics)

:GUI Men's football

:MLI Men's football

Someone else? What do you think?

Such a shame that like :MKD:ALB will also probably have their first ever Olympic medal come from a naturalised athlete who has nothing to do with the country...

Also in before they start trying to claim Dimas, Sabanis, and Kokas  Manjani and I think Mitrou were actually Albanians though to be fair.

Only my opinions

Big chance:

:ALB - naturalised wrestlers + potential impact from Gega

Good chance:

:IVB - strong chances in athletics

:DMA LaFond in Triple Jump

Small chance:

:AND - women's canoeing

:BEN - leaving room for Yarigo to surprise everyone, although very small chances.

:BIH - Pudar have small chances in swimming.

:GUI - football, everyone's game.

:LES - small chances in marathon

:MAD - women's weightlifting, especially post disqualifications

:MLI - football and taekwondo

:LCA - athletics

Miracle needed:

:ANG - competes in various sports, but no athletes that can win a medal imo

:ANT - always decent in athletics sprints and sailing, but not close to medals

:ARU - we had surprise victories in BMX before, so you never know, otherwise not really..

:CPV - we have seen surprise medals in boxing and with relatively small boxing pools, there might be a chance

:COD - we have seen surprise medals in boxing and with relatively small boxing pools, there might be a chance

:ESA - competes in numerous sports, maybe surfing can be a bit more unexpected

:GAM - taekwondo produced some surprise medal winners before, so...

:GUM - with weightlifting disqualification, they might receive medal after few years hehe..

:GBS - simply because of surprise element of combat sports.

:LBR - healthy athletics sprinting squad

:MON - miracle needed for table tennis

:PNG - weightlifting

:RWA - cycling and long distance running

No chance:

:ASA:BAN:BIZ:BHU:BOL:BRU:CAM:CAY:CAF:CHA:COM:CGO:COK:SWZ:GEQ:HON:KIR:LAO:LBA:MAW:MDV:MLT:MHL:MTN:FSM:MYA:NRU:NEP:NCA:OMA:PLW:PLE:SKN:VIN:STP:SEY:SLE:SOL:SOM:SSD:TLS:TUV:VAN:YEM

Finished  4th in 2008 but the Russian and Kazakhstani both got caught doping

Just to be factually correct - it was a Ukrainian and KAZ who got caught.... ;) I believe we all see a difference between RU and UA now... ;)

    • Ooooooh the group of Canada , they play in Toronto then Vancouver ...look at the distance
    • now the shooting sport takes a little Christmas break and the new season resumes in January with the Asian Championships for the Shotgun specialists ( Doha, Jan. 11th through 22nd)   the World Cup will be back in late March, beginning in  Tangiers (March 25th through April 3rd, Shotgun specialists only)   the Rifle and Pistol specialists will start their new season with the European 10m Championships in  Yerevan (Feb. 27th through March 5th) and the 1st World Cup stage for them will be in  Granada in April (5th through 13th)   300m, 25m and 50m European Champs will be in  Osijek (May 30th through June 21st), meanwhile the Shotgun European Champs will be held in  Athens from Sept. 27th through Oct. 13th
    • Rare thing not to see Hancock winning gold.
    • USA will.play in California then Seattle then California ...why hell this long distance , teams should stay in 1 place , this is tiring even for spectators
    • so, the 2025 season is officially over, after the World Cup Finals have been completed with the Shotgun events, where (once again!!!) a new format for the final stage of each event has been experimented for the first time (before it becomes a regular feature in the next season)   the new format enlarge the starting field in each event's final stage to 8 shooters and dramatically shortens the number of target shots to decide the placings   the only characteristic remaining is the progressive eliminations principle   now, as written above, 8 shooters make the final, where after only 12 targets the eliminations start: by then, the last 2 shooters must leave the competition (7th and 8th ranked)   after 12 more targets (24 in total), 2 more shooters have to leave the final (5th and 6th ranked)   then, the crazy carousel starts: every 4 targets we have a new elimination  so, after 28 targets, the 4th ranked shooter is done; after 32 targets the bronze medallist is known and after only 36 targets (provided there's no need for a shoot-off), compared to the previous 60, the gold and silver medallists are crowned   I guess the tiktok people with the attention span of a chinchilla have won once again
