And i wonder how big are their chances for a medal in equestrian events.

BEL has qualified teams in all 3 equestrian discipines: jumping, eventing and dressage.

Jokes aside, Wout Van Aert, Lotte Kopecky, Field Hockey, Thiam ? came as first to mind

very good medal chances (disappointing if they don't get anything from here)

Cycling: Van Aert, Evenepoel, Kopecky, De Ketele and friends (both Road races, men's ITT on the road, women's Omnium and men's Madison on the track)

Field Hockey: men's Team

Athletics: Nafi Thiam (women's Eptathlon)

Judo: Matthias Casse (men's -81kg)

Sailing: Emma Plasschaert (women's ILCA 6)

reasonable medal chances (might get a medal, but might also miss out)

Equestrian: Show Jumping Team

Athletics: men's 4*400m Relay

Judo: Jorre Varstraeten (men's -60kg)

Fencing: Nasser Loyola (men's individual Epee, if he can qualify...and it's a big "if" given the FIE rules for the Nations not qualifying for the team event)

remote medal chances (if they get something here, we can call it a surprise)

Equestrian: any Individual member of the Show Jumping Team

Athletics: Noor Vids (women's Eptathlon), women's 4*400m Relay, Bashir Abdi (men's Marathon), Cynthia Bolingo (women's 400m)

Taekwondo: Sirine Chaari (women's -67kg)

Judo: Sami Chouchi (men's -90kg, if can qualify after switching weight class), Toma Nikiforov (men's -100kg), Gabriella Willems (women's -70kg)

Canoeing: women's K2

Rowing: men's LW2X

Triathlon: Jelle Geens, Marten Van Riel (men's individual race)

Don't forget the women's field hockeyteam. After Netherlands the best in the world in my opinion.

And the Belgian women's basketball team has a good chance to medal as well.

But the best chances for gold are Kopecky (3x), Evenepoel and Van Aert (2x), Casse and Thiam. But I won't be surprised if they get 10 gold medals.

Ten gold for BEL??? Oh it is too much i am afraid. But who knows…

Belgian medal tally has been below 10 since 1924, but everything’s possible I suppose. Belgium certainly has been underperforming, but the inventory of Belgian medal chances seems a bit on the optimistic side.

Noor Vidts: if she could not win a medal in Budapest in a weak competion, she’s never going to do it at World level.
There’s a big question mark about Thiam’s return. But even then, Anna Hall must be the favorite for Gold.
The Rowing LWX2 did not make it to final of the World Champs, and failed to win a quotum.

The 4x400 relay Men narrowly failed to qualify for the final in Budapest: time really seems to be up for the incredible Borlee twins and Belgium has failed to find comparable replacements. The women finished 5th, and that was in a race without the Americans.
Of the five Judoka’s mentioned, only one won a medal at this years World Champs.

Kopecky winning 3 golds?: next year’s Road race is far less ideal for her than the one in Glasgow, she’s really not the favorite for the time trial, and her chances in the Madison are heavily influenced by if the doping suspension of her partner will stand or not.

Hockey: the women are just as capable as sucker punching the Dutch in the final as finishing 7th. Also, they haven’t always been lucky in qualifying. The men failed  to win their last two tournaments, and are in a bit of transition, with some of their older players retiring or not being selected.

show jumping really is completely unpredictable. In Tokyo Belgium won bronze in the team event on the back of the refusal of one the French horses (IIRC).

Belgium certainly has a lot of opportunities, but I once read somewhere for most teams only 1/3 of those, come to fruition.

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse. Years and years participating in the elite and we haven't been able to evolve; it was just a waste.

    • Another weak result for our athletics team, which is typical; without Caio or Alisson, our chances of a medal in any high-level tournament are almost zero.   However, Juliana's result in the women's pole vault was a great 7th place. She is improving rapidly and still has a lot of room for growth.
