Tokyo 2020 Day after Day as it could have happened

1) Ok ... so if Mali wins the next Africa Cup, you will predict that they reach the top 3 of the next world cup ... ?

All 4 european teams that qualified will 99 % field teams that will be clearly stronger than Egypt. Salah is a great player, but ...

a) One player like him isn't enough

b) Other nations could also nominate world-class players who are older than 23

2) How do you know the draw already?

3) France won't even make the semifinal despite having clearly the best talent pool of all teams?

4) I didn't say anything about womens canoeing sprint, because i don't follow women's canoeing sprint, so i have no idea who will be the medal contenders.

I made a kind of prediction of draw at the beginning of this thread ;-)

French football teams tend to implode in the tournaments, even if they look good on paper. RSA 2010, e.g.

Anyway, we will see.

I think the Netherlands and especially India would be super happy. India would probably declare a national holiday ...

Not so sure about France, Japan and GB though ...

For Germany it would be a decent result. On the one hand "we" should do much better in swimming and athletics than in 2016, on the other hand it would be a miracle if "we" could repeat our great performances in shooting and canoeing sprint. Germany hasn't won a swimming (gold) medal since 2008, so it would be great if Wellbrock could make it happen. Swimming, athletics and track cycling are the sports i care most about at the olympics, so i hope that Germany will do good there.

From a german perspective i also hope that ...

a) At least one german team (handball/hockey) will reach a final

b) At least one german athlete will fight for gold in the individual jumping event till the last round

c) At least one german athlete/team will fight for a medal in fencing

d) At least one german woman will reach the balance beam final

e) At least one german athlete/double will reach a tennis final

Swimming and athletics - me, too.

I don't know much about track cycling. Never tried to watch it carefully yet. But I will try.

I watch road racing much more.

It was nice discussion with you through all these days - you are obviously an expert here.

Have a good weekend.

Great insight ... so the predictions we make 1 week before the games will matter how?

Of course a lot can happen, but you can say the same about any sport. What if the NBA will boycott the games? Would the US still be favorites for gold?

By that logic we shouldn't make any predictions before the games.

No, we can't say the same about every sport. In women's football we know perfectly well that all teams will take their best available players. Of course we can make a much better prediction for it compared to men's. Same with a lot of other sports.. volleyball, handball, rowing, canoeing, etc.

On the other hand there is sports like Men's football, men's basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, etc with more uncertainty of who will show up as a start.

But you already know all this, I don't know why you found my statement controversial :dunno:

@Gianlu33 it will be the biggest surprise in the history of Olympic wrestling if Snyder and Sharifov win medals in Greco-Roman :d

I know it's impossible to have knowledge about all sports but taking a look at @rafalgorka predictions, at least in wrestling it's almost copy/paste of 2019 results. we had some surprise winners (specially bronze medalists) mostly because the draw was rigged (yes it was) to help Kazakhstani wrestlers, therefore some lucky wrestlers won some medals they couldn't even dream about. likes of Nurov, Deng and that Swiss guy only can win medal with a super easy draw like that.

this is my prediction for freestyle . but remember this is for August 2020, (if they wouldn't postpone the Games) , my prediction for 2021 is different. some youngsters will catch up with big names soon.

and I also didn't consider ranking and seedings, because for example Uguev and Ravi are currently 1st and 4th in WR, with no more ranking event left (the last one being cancelled), they were supposed to meet before the final.

57kg: 1) :RUS Uguev 2) :IND Ravi 3) :TUR Atli and :JPN Higuchi

65kg: 1) :RUS Rashidov 2) :JPN Otoguro 3) :AZE Aliyev and :IND Bajrang

74kg: 1) :USA Burroughs 2) :RUS Sidakov 3) :ITA Chamizo and :GEO Kentchadze

86kg: 1) :IRI Yazdani 2) :USA Taylor 3) :RUS Naifonov and :BLR Shabanov

97kg: 1) :RUS Sadulaev 2) :IRI Mohammadian 3) :USA Snyder and :AZE Sharifov

125kg: 1) :GEO Petriashvili 2) :TUR Akgul 3) :IRI Zare and :UKR Khotsianivskyi

* I really had a hard time to pick a 4th guy for 86kg. I think there are something like 10 wrestlers more or less in the same level.
