Who’s this DariBilodid chick, and why do y’all love her?

Maybe if she wins the Olympic Gold in Tokyo you'll get to know her better

Pretty sure I reported on her 2019 European Games medal, and I still couldn’t remember who she was :p

Americans don't care about judo so it's not a surprise :dunno:

If you’ve followed any of my reporting, you’d know I appreciate a good judo bout. I’m just not good with names, and I feel like we’ve already established this. It’s also hard for me to remember the names of younger athletes, who I haven’t seen as often. It still is quite shocking her name didn’t ring bell after how dominant she’s been this year. I just can’t believe the world’s top skateboarders aren’t getting any acknowledgement. They’ve achieved much more in longer careers (even though they’re 13-17)

Right. You're a judo fan but not good with names like Bilodid? It's like saying someone is a basketball fan but hasn't heard about James Harden

I don't watch skateboarding and probably never will :dunno:

I focus on flags more than names :dunno:. I should honestly know more names, but I just don’t. I don’t actually watch a lot of sport outside multi-sports games or world championships. I don’t really have one overall passion. I have a bunch of subjects/hobbies that I’m rather knowledgeable about. There’s also like 150 sports to follow, so it can be a lot. I really do need to get better at watching sports though.

Reminds me of this: (Hint #1 everyone in Europe knows how Michael Jordan looks like  ). All these LeBron vs Jordan debates you have in USA are moot, Europe votes for Jordan all the time. Hint #2 nobody over here knows a damn thing about baseball, even a guy wearing a Yankee cap can't recognize Jeter

    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
