Fencing FIE World Championships 2023

Recommended Posts

KOCH!!! We might be cursed in men's epee at the Games with the two final losses in a row, but not at the Worlds. We now have one former and one reigning World Champions in our men's epee team. Boys, please, don't mess up the team qualification.

I really hope she can be on the piste tomorrow :fingers:

she deserves to qualify to the Olympics, even if the team fails (of course I wish them to qualify, but in case it doesn't happen, Kharlan needs a plan B)

Not to take away from the individual competitions, but the most important part starts tomorrow with the first rounds of the team events.

Here are the brackets...

Men's sabre (34 teams)

:KOR v :IRL / :UZB  ||  :GEO v :HKG

:EGY v :GBR / [ BYE ] ||  :CHN v :CHI

:GER v :SGP / [ BYE ] ||  :ESP v :POL

:USA v :IND / [ BYE ] ||  :ROU v :KAZ

:ITA v :BUL / [ BYE ] ||  :UKR v :TUN

:FRA v :VEN / [ BYE ] ||  :CAN v :KUW

:IRI v :BRA / [ BYE ] ||  :JPN v :KSA

:HUN v :MEX / :NZL  ||  :TUR v :COL

Women's epee (36 teams)

:KOR v :CRC / :UZB  ||  :JPN v :ROU

:UKR v :GBR / [ BYE ] ||  :HUN v :VEN

:USA v :COL / [ BYE ] ||  :ISR v :ARG

:POL v :GEO / :CRO  ||  :EGY v :BRA

:ITA v :AUS / :FIN  ||  :CAN v :ESP

:HKG v :MAR / [ BYE ] ||  :EST v :SGP

:CHN v :IND / [ BYE ] ||  :SUI v :MEX

:FRA v :KAZ / :NZL  ||  :GER v :SWE

Very important match between Egypt and Brazil early on in women's epee. If Egypt wins that match, they will almost certainly qualify to Paris. Hungary v Ukraine in the R16 can have lasting impact on the European quota.

Btw, here's an interesting stat:

:HUN Géza Imre won men's epee at the 2015 Worlds and then lost the 2016 SOG final

:HUN Gergely Siklósi won men's epee at the 2019 Worlds and then lost the 2020 SOG final

:HUN Máté Koch won men's epee at the 2023 Worlds and then...

And :HUN Krisztián Kulcsár also won men's epee at the Worlds before the Beijing Olympics. He flopped in Beijing, just like the rest of our team in that catastrophic Games.

4 out of the last 5 men's epee WCh competitions before the Games were won by Hungarians.

We haven't won men's epee at the Games since 1972...

Maybe this is how we are paying for the three consecutive Szilágyi gold medals.

I find the most cursed stats even when we win. :lol:

    • I have reported this again and they said it should be fixed now, please let me know if you are still facing issues.
    • more countries added to the list of US ban    you can't travel to USA if you are from : burkina faso , niger , Laos , South sudan , mali , sierra leon ...
    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
