Sorry I meant to say recently. Germany's last hosting was in 1972.

All of the bigger countries have hosted an Olympiad since then.

Here is a list of countries that have a bigger population than Australia and won’t have hosted summer Olympics between 2000 and 2032:

Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Russia, Canada, India, Mexico, Turkey

Do you really think that Australia should host summer Olympics twice during that period while all the aforementioned countries didn’t even host them once combined?

Of course you could argue that some hosted Winter Olympics recently, but I am not sure why you should throw those two things together.

Should they? Perhaps not. Are they the only country of those mentioned that has shown in interest in bidding, and provided a legitimate/realistic (relative) bid? Yes.

Why do you feel the need to make absurd statements like that?

a) Of the countries I mentioned Turkey (2020), Italy (2004), Canada (2008) and Spain (2012, 2016, 2020) all handed in bids that got a lot of votes (which is pretty much the definition of handing in a „legitimate“ bid). Germany (2000) and Russia (2012) also bid at one point.

b) How can you judge which countries would have handed in „legitimate“ bids, when those countries weren’t even given the chance to hand in a bid?

Might as well close this thread since there is no bidding "process" to begin with. Brisbane gets it and everyone else can f### off :p

Agreed. I honestly can’t believe what is going on. Now we might have 3 olympics in a row without a bidding process. Everyone knows that IOC officials are corrupt and always have been, but I can’t believe that they don’t Even bother anymore to hide it, they must feel untouchable. I hope that countries will boycott the 2032 games if there won’t be a fair process to determine the host. Sadly this won’t happen though ...

I guess it wasn’t clear that I was referring to 2032, apologies.

Well, I’ve read what’s been reported about the possible bids. I’m near certain that all those countries had the opportunity to engage in dialogue with the IOC. I’m not saying that the possibility of a better bid taking shaped isn’t possible; I’m just saying that from what I’ve seen, Brisbane’s bid is best one at the moment.

And there won't be another one since IOC has clearly said they prefer Brisbane. So nobody will waste a single penny of public money to bid for something that's already been decided. You got to love democracy, transparency & integrity shown by IOC here? :p

Only Australia really showed advanced interest. Is it fair that they get the games because they were the most advanced? Probably not. Also, if a country is really interested now would be the time to come forth. The games are not locked in Brisbane.

Well there are  16  economies of at least a trillion $US in the world and Australia is on a median wealth per adult  the wealthiest  ( that is a trillion $US  with both Nominal and PPP GDP and median wealth not mean wealth. Australian wealth is widely spread )

It has handled the present pandemic better than any of the other 15 trillion dollar economy countries

Australia cities have  a distinct lack of no go areas and very  few people live on the streets . This will make a pleasant change after Paris and LA .

Don't think many here are well travelled enough  if I may state the bleeding obvious

2032 will follow a European and an American Games so a new continent is in order . IOC officials want competence , interest in sport  , a friendly comfortable relaxed atmosphere for athletes and visitors alike    (which certain  European countries have never had  and are probably incapable of having )

Financial competence is important -Australian cities have great existing facilities

Etc etc

Would you rather sacrifice one child to save two adults or two children to save four adults?

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
