Winter Olympic Games 2026 Bid Process

If I'm not mistaken, going from Termas de Chillan (Chile) to Bariloche (Argentina) is a couple of hours driving, not too bad. There's also Portillo in Chile where they have a biathlon range. One with really crappy tracks, but alright  

 

It already happened a few times in the late Eighties and early Nineties...

but then the idea was abandoned due to economical issues (most Nations couldn't afford a trip in the Southern Hemisphere)...

 

this is a quick reminder of those times...

 

1985/1986
2 men's Downhill races in Las Leñas (August 16th & 18th, 1985...both won by Karl Alpiger)

 

1986/1987
2 men's Downhill races in Las Leñas (August 15th & 16th, 1986...the first one won by Peter Mueller and the second one won by Pirimin Zurbriggen)

 

1989/1990
1 men's Giant Slalom + 1 men's Slalom in Thredbo (August 11th & 12th, 1989...the GS won by Lars-Borje Eriksson and the SL won by Armin Bittner)
1 women's Downhill + 1 women's Super-G races in Las Leñas (August 8th & 9th, 1989...the DH won by Michaela Gerg and the SG won by Anita Wachter)

 

1990/1991
1 men's Giant Slalom + 1 men's Slalom in Mount Hutt (August 8th & 9th, 1990...the GS won by Fredrik Nyberg and the SL won by Peter Roth)

Never is a strong word, but there is literally no reason to consider them any time soon.

 

That's like considering Mali or Guatemala for summer Olympics.

If the facilities are there (which at least in the case of Ushuaia - or Bariloche or Termas de Chillan for that matter - is definitely not the case), I don't see the problem. Mt Hotham in Australia should give it a try.

The risky thing is the season preparation for many athletes. Those in winter sports undergo tough physical trainings - gain the muscle, condition, etc. In autumn, final preparation for competing and december starts the season. Could you imagina that they would have to end previous season March and right away start prefect preparation for Olympics which would be held some time August/September and then prepare perfectly for the new season? This is kinda impossible. Many athletes would have to give up winter season for Olympics (might not be prepared enough) or they would give up Olympics and would participate usual world cup. This would be real mess in their common seasonal routine. 

 

I am not saying that South America is bad place for Winter Sports or Winter Olympics. But because its geaografical location it might br hard for most athletes to prepare for the games.

They'll have to find a way for it one way or another then. It'd be a matter of making choices, which would most likely mean missing World Cups.

I don’t see it going anywhere because of Italy’s complex political situation and the inability of people to unite and rally behind the bid. Unlike in Calgary or Stockholm/Sigulda
