Double Gold for :GBR in what is now officially the World’s Greatest Sporting Discipline!  :toast:

~Kayak Cross puts me in mind of the admiring yet terrible french description of the doomed Charge of the Light Brigade:

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre.

It's great bloody fun, and I'll buy it as an event, but it ain't slalom. That said, BMX ain't Tour de France either, so I'm all for let a thousand flowers bloom.

And I'd certainly watch it over bloody breaking.

Looking forward to a similar vibe once obstacle comes into Modern Pentathlon. Up and at 'em, and may the devil take the last.

I liked Je sans Frontieres too but I'm not sure it had a place in the Olympics.  Still it is what it is and I'll still watch it. 😊

All sport is ridiculous taken apart; all the matters is that those who play, and those who watch, care.

If anyone had said in the year 2000 that Britain would be one of the World’s best nations in gymnastics, cycling & canoe slalom, they’d have been taken away in a straitjacket.

So from :GBR quota perspective, I think the "qualified" athletes are

C1 - Mallory Franklin

K1 - Phoebe Spicer

That leaves Kimberley Woods free to take part in the Kayak-Cross qualifier in Prague next year.

On the men's side,

C1 - Adam Burgess

K1 - Joe Clarke

Not sure our C1 men do a lot of Kayak-Cross so team for Prague qualifier will probably be led by Jonny Dickson and Chris Bowers

There's a joke I heard when I was younger that :GBR tend to perform better in sports where you sit (canoeing, cycling, equestrian, rowing, sailing)

I think my biggest problem with it is the amount of luck as well as skill that is often involved. Your choice of gate can effect not only your own fate but that of others in both positive and negative ways.

Still it's entertaining and as you say it's definitely preferable to breaking! It's a sport for starters! 😎 If nothing else I won't forget Stephanie Horn's decision to swim rather than paddle down the course today! 🏊‍♀️

It was made by an Aussie which is ironic considering that they too rely heavily on those sports at the OG together with one in which they are horizontal most of the time!😊

Surely Mallory gets to compete in the K1 as she was the top athlete.

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
