The Dutch ladies Beune, Schouten and Groenewoud skated by far the fastest time, but were disqualified because a small piece of skin from Beune's ankle was visible during the race. That seems to be forbidden.

That seems like a somewhat ridiculous reason for a DQ?

Skin of ankles must be covered for safety. During the race, the covering of Beune's ankle shifted, resulting in disqualification. Bizarre rule and sorry for the team. This was the first decent team pursuit of the Netherlands in ages. And sorry for Beune, who normally finishes fourth in most of the competitions she skates.

I've seen speed skating for most of my 32 years, but I don't think I've often seen a more ridiculous situation than this, damn. Nothing against the Canadians of course, but I guess they know they got the gold on a technicality and not because they were the best.

Not like the rule in itself is necessarily a bad one, but it's always odd to have situations where there's either no punishment or a straight-up DQ. Rules are rules though.

Ok catching up a bit and Jordan Stolz's 34,10 might be the next most ridiculous thing I've seen in a very very long time, but this one is ridiculous in the absolutely most positive sense of the word :hyper:

Wow, wow, wow. Without any doubt one of the top performances across all sports in 2023 so far. There are no words to describe how insane this race was.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
