Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Championships 2019

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

@thiago_simoes Mexican shortlist for the 2019 World Championships in WAG has been announced.

The returns of Alexia Moreno, Frida Esparza and veterans Ana Lago and Elsa García... I think they have a very small chance, if they all hit their best level, to be team 12. What do you think?

Meanwhile, the MAG shortlist features all three finalists at the Pan Am Games, plus Kevin Cerda.

Dutch women team for the Worlds:

Lieke Wevers
Naomi Visser

Eythora Thorsdottir

Sanne Wevers (who's back after several injuries, she's still not 100% recovered)

Tisha Volleman

Vera van Pol

:NED has a chance to qualify for the Olympics, but will be hard. Will be a tough battle for the last spots (place 11-12) with Belgium, Romania and Germany (I think).

VERY surprising results. First, Sunisa Lee almost beat Biles. I thought no one would come close to Biles until she retired, but look at what we got here? Second, Skinner came back very strong, and no one expected that. Wong and Hurd, who were no brainers for the team, finished very low and probably will not be selected. Chiles and Thomas, two great gymnasts who I thought would also be part of the team, finished in very low positions. I'm curious about who will be on the team. If these results are to be taken seriously (and, well, they are), the team will have unexpected names like Lee, Carey and Skinner.

Yes very interesting results. I will say that my least favorite period, is the USA gymnastics selection event every Olympic year. The drama is way too much, the commentary sucks, etc. Just choose a team and get on with it! Also don’t let someone finish 3rd or 4th and then not select them!

Sometimes it makes sense for the team competition not to choose gymnasts who placed 3rd or 4th in the all-around. Maybe those who finished 3rd have nothing good to add to the team, or no chance to earn medals in individual apparatus, so it makes sense not to select them. I expect the 2020 team to be composed of gymnasts who place 1st and 2nd in the all-around competition, and two wildly different gymnasts with good chances of individual medals.

I’m just against the public trials for gymnastics. They could say 1st and 2nd automatically qualifies for Tokyo and then the federation will select the other 2. It would prevent so much unnecessary and unhealthy gender standards.

Yeah it'd be easier to say top two all-arounds qualify, the next two athletes will be selected in a way that maximizes their team score.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
