Men's Final Result

Gold:       :GBR Jo Choong - (Quota)

Silver:     :MEX Emiliano Hernandez - Qualifies for Paris

Bronze:  :EGY Mohanad Shaban - (Quota)

I can see that only a medalist could qualify. So looks like it goes to Hernandez and other 2 quota will allocated according to the world ranking, right?

Yep - same situation we had in the women's event. There will now be 9 quotas allocated to the Olympic Ranking List.

First individual medal for Mexico at World Championships :hyper:

And curiously, won by the younger brother of 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, Ismael Hernandez.

Plus, this gives some margin for a second Mexican man to obtain a second quota at PanAm Games.

Unless Hernandez finish in the podium at the Panam Games ahead of other Mexican athlete, in which case, this quota reverts to World Ranking.

From my reading of the qualification document, if Hernandez finishes on the podium, his quota would revert to the next unqualified athlete at the Pan-Am Games as opposed to going to the Olympic Ranking List - the reallocation only seems to apply to the European championship.

The quotas for Pan-Am slightly more complicated than other continents though:

1)  - Whoever finishes first will win a quota

2) - 2 quotas will then go to best finishers from South America

3) - 2 quotas will then go to best finishers from NORECA

Are the quotas athlete specific?

Yes - the document says the quotas are allocated to the named athletes however NOCs with more than 2 athletes qualified would be able to choose who is in their squad (although not entirely sure how a nation would qualify more than 2 athletes)

There's a few ways, though the most common would be through the world rankings

Some general observations:

:GBR still showing determined performance and still one of the top teams men and women

:ITA great women team but the men team needs huge boosting

:HUN just unlucky this tournament, still favourable for future world and Olympic medals

:EGY the strongest men team so far, epic laser run between three team mates, women team is average

:GER no longer strong team, they will be in olympics but not that strong anymore

:FRA a big question mark, very bad performance from great names, needs huge improvement and they have 1 year till the Olympics

:POL seems average team, can’t see them on the Olympic podium

:CZE men team needs more fencing quality, women team is average

:LTU very strong women team but consistency between displines needs improvement, men team is average

:UKR not this Olympic I presume maybe the next one if MP still there  😉

:MEX very good team men and women, Mariana put too much effort in the first 800m laser run and she paid it in a hard way, still dangerous team if they keep their fencing performance up

:KOR one of the strongest men and women teams, but if they are not 1st or 2nd before laser run they will not make the podium

what do you reckon?

    • North American rugby quotas ( and qualified automatically)    M: and W: and
    • I remember Caroline Golubitsky. She competed with Vezzali for a while but not for long. Rita Konig, whom Vezzali defeated in the final of the Olympic Games in 2000, was more famous, as well as Sabine Bau and Anja Mueller. From what I remember, the Germans competed fiercely with us at some point, but they almost always lost.
    • Shemyakina won a bronze medal in 2014 Worlds and was one of our leader but leave the squad due to pregnancy (she has 2 daughters if I'm not mistaking, so she chose family instead of sport). And speaking of foil we have back in the day Sergiy Golubitskyi, who was Olympic silver medalist and won some medals in other competitions and coached his wife Caroline Golubitskyi - one of the German foil specialists. Even in women's foil we had medal in Women's foil at the European championship - it was Olha Leleiko, our current national coach. So no, we are pretty good fencing country, and depending on generations of our athletes some events are more "profitable" for us and some don't.
    • Shemyakina that was a very strange story. She unexpectedly won the games but before and after she literally achieved nothing. After that success in 2012 she also completely disappeared. It's only in epee that such strange situations. That's why I've always preferred foil and sabre, because the top was more stable there, although that's changing now. The competition has grown a lot all over the world.
