  • 4 months later...

As I expected the first leg of the European Championships in Algarve this week-end will determine the seeds for the Krakow OQT.

:ESP :POR :LTU :CZE

:GER :ITA :GEO :ROU

:FRA :BEL :GBR :IRL

Really unfortunate sequence of events for Belgium, who's probably the best up-and coming team of the tournament (having won one of the Challenger Series leg back in April), but suffer the worst draw of the lot. GB and Ireland promoted from Trophy last year, where they were relegated after missing one season of the EC. None of the two managed to qualify for the Games so they will bring full strength in Portugal. Not the case for France though (on the men's side).

Algarve 7s results :

  1. :IRL
  2. :GEO
  3. :FRA
  4. :GBR
  5. :POR
  6. :ESP
  7. :GER
  8. :ITA
  9. :BEL
  10. :LTU
  11. :ROU
  12. :CZE

Ireland look dominant. GB really disappointing, losing two times against Ireland (close calls though) and two times against France Development. As I said in an other topic Georgia was unknown quantity, and they mean business. Strong showing in the playoff games after an anonymous pool stage.

Disastrous finals for Spain. On the paper they're at least deemed to get a final OQT spot. Germany disappointing once again.

Portugal confirm their dark horse status. Not much to take out for Belgium, like I said the pools were utterly unbalanced, with a strong French B squad all in all.

So pools for Krakow :

:IRL :GER :ITA :POL

:GEO :ESP :BEL :CZE

:GBR :POR :LTU :ROU

Jeez :GBR are struggling in the first half to put :GER away - just 2 points in it at half time. If Germany can keep their heads, they could just sneak this.

Germany's try should have been a penalty try and a yellow card. Pity they scored despite the deliberate knock-on.

That was just an embarrassing performance from GB :facepalm:They couldn't even kick the ball off the field to end the game cleanly.

Harder an harder to look past Ireland - though Germany gave them a run out too - I've ALWAYS thought if the Germans ever really woke up to Rugby, you'd be staring at a super power within a decade or two, the gam,e would just absolutely suit them (same for Russians, as it happens)

Much better looking on disstaff side, and some unlikely team or teams are going to see the final qualifier.

Well this looked like a swan song from Germany 7s. They were close to getting to the WS a couple times but now they've gone backwards.

    • Congrats Diggins, well deserved! 👏   Too bad she fell on the last lap in the last race (as well as Karlsson also did x2).   For the future I would really like them to remove the bonus sprint points suring the race that almost makes more importance to the overall standings than the positions over the finish line. And get back to the same point system as the other FIS events. 30 gets points instead on 50, and 100-80-60... instead of this system. in this case Diggins deserves it and Sweden who of different reasons have missed pets of the season On purpose or not, does not deserve it. But it as it is now it may take 20 wins to catch up for one missed race (if the opponent is 2nd in each). Dahlqvist won the sprint cup without any individual wins (3rd overall) is one example of that.    There must be room to miss a race of any reason. If not, it Will not make people race more events, instead it might make skoters who already missed one weekend feel they are already too far behind so they light as well take less priority on the rest of the World cup season. Also skiiers who in Norway for example would be good enough for a top3 in the overall might not even be selected for many races due to the internal competition. Same for a skiier like Ebba Andersson who most likely would not qualify if she would be selected to go a sprint race. But she would still get a few points probably for rk 31-50, but because she would not make it in to the Swedish sprint team she Will lose a lot even compared to those who fail the sprint qualifications. Frida Karlsson another example, she would also probably have qualified most of the times but is most often not good enough to make the team. With more award to winning and making podiums and also less athletes scoring that would make it better I think. The scoring system in biathlon got some critics when they decided you have to count all races, but they at least increased the value of top positions meaning you could faster catch up a bad race/missed race, by a few podiums.
    • Great to see O’Connor on the podium again! Thats 4 major medals in the past 12 months (World Indoors x 2, Euro Indoors and World Championships).   Her strongest event is the javelin so she is going to continue to be a huge threat in the heptathlon this summer and she is still improving all the other events. Exciting times for her
    • Congrats to Diggins winning the WC in her final season
    • Call me mad, but it feels very strange to have made it all the way through a major championships without hearing how the results were going to lead to a slashing of funding for  sport.
    • Only Fabbri from Italy has disappointed and that's a bit concerning... In 3 of the last 4 major events (OG and 2x Indoor World Champ), he's performed significantly worse than he did on the entire season – he took bronze at the 2025 World Championships, but his result was also nothing special. His performance today is completely incomprehensible  (
