Have seen 4/8 Best Picture nominees so far. My rankings are as follows...

  • Sound of Metal
  • Promising Young Woman
  • Mank
  • The Trial of the Chicago 7

PYW notably went above my expectations, while the bottom two are just not worth it...

Avatar is currently on play in China again due to lack of new movies. I guess China would contribute another 35M-40M USD in this round of re-releasing. The next round of re-releasing in April is Lord of the Rings 1,2,3.

I really liked The Trial of the Chicago 7, but maybe it’s more domestically appealing than internationally appealing.

Here’s the full list of Best Picture noms:

I only watched Nomadland because its Chinese director. The atmosphere and the performing skill are definitely gorgers. I like this movie but I still think it overrated. The story itself is very much predictable and sorta over political correctness for me. Just like the B-side of the Green Book.

And also congrats Better Days representing Hong Kong nominated by Best International Feature Film. It's a very good movie about school bullying and teenagers' love and responsibility. The main actress's performing captured every viewer's heart. I highly recommend it for you guys. Below is the trailer.

The Oscars are this sunday so it's time for my annual predictions post. Last year was a pretty good one regarding my predictions with 19/24 correct picks, but again missed the Best Picture winner - last time I got this award right was back in 2014 with 12 Years a Slave (!). This year I'm confident Nomadland will take it, but given my bad retrospect in this category, I wouldn't be surprised if I got this wrong again. But the most exciting race this year is the Best Actress category, with 4 nominees having a realistic chance of winning.

["will win" is my prediction / "could win" is my alternate prediction / "should win" is my personal ranking from what I've watched / "shoud have been nominated" is a way to remember other notable work].

    • Out of curiosity, I listened to a few podcasts about Turkmenistan today. This country has very large deposits of natural gas. In the 1990s, a simple a ordinary people lived quite well there. In the early 21st century, Turkmenistan signed several unfavorable gas deals with China and has practically gone bankrupt since then. 1/3 of the population (about 2 million out of 6 million- mostly young people) emigrated, mainly to Turkey, India, etc. The future of this country is blacka and uncertain. I don't know what other options they have? Russia, Turkey, the EU? Of course, in terms of selling gas. Perhaps sanctions of Russia's and isolation due to the war in Ukraine would be a chance for Turkmenistan to establish economic relations with the EU, but the new president would probably have to loosen and a little liberate up his country's domestic politics.
    • A friend of mine who visited 97 countries of the world be in Turkmenistan (with Kunshamara, are the onlyones i know) and he tell me something that never see in another country: his presence was enough to make nervous to all the people, in restaurants, markets, etc, the presence of an "outsider" generate that.
