Commonwealth Games 2018

All countries had their quotas slashed for the event, only 80% of the last 3 events averaged can be sent by each country (in the individual events). So strict countries like South Africa this meant reducing their already strict set teams. This has left a ridiculous level of competition, for ex. Malaysia and South Africa have the same team size in athletics. Any athlete from Malaysia would probably struggle to make South Africa's team for ex. India and Canada have the same almost (31 v 35), and majority of Indian athletes wouldn't even qualify for Canada's team.

Looking at the wrestling entries, there are only 5 in a lot of the women's categories and other events too have a small number of entries.

So note to the CGF: Instead of reducing the county's allocation, make a qualification system for each sport that allows a good number of entrants, like they did with weightlifting.

That's where things are heading, but there's a lot of push-back from the crown dependencies/other territories that compete at the games, but not necessarily internationally (because they don't have a recognized sport federation). I wouldn't mind just giving everyone 15-20 individual spots that decrease as you qualify athletes

The wrestling event has three different formats due to the low number of athletes

5 athletes: round robin (nordic)

6-7 athletes: group stage, then semifinal+final

8+ athletes: bracket with reprechage

6/12 events have less than 8 athletes. Not a very good showing and could put the sport at risk from appearing in future games (it is an optional sport)

All team sizes added to the first page.

Australia as hosts will have the largest team of 474, with England (396) and Canada (282) rounding out the top 3 largest delegations.

Gambia with 6 athletes has the smallest team as it was only allowed to compete a few days ago, both Tuvalu and Montserrat with 7 athletes each have the other smallest teams. Brunei who only had 1 athlete in 2014, has 10 in 2018 who will all compete in Lawn Bowls.

    • Assuming Venezuela loses and gives up 4+ runs, Canada just needs PR to lose and give up 9 or more runs in a 9 inning or less game. I hadn't realized one of their games went to 10 innings before. I think it's possible, but we'll have to wait and see.
