Men's Football UEFA European Championship 2024

Recommended Posts

Dutch TV had a piece on why the Netherlands is so godawful at penalty shootouts, losing 6 out of 8 in World Cups and European championships. The hit rate of penalties isn't that bad, but the stoppage rate is horrible, basically lower than any other top European country. However, we have Bart Verbruggen now, and the show called upon giving him an international reputation as a penalty killer (which he is, he stopped three of Ludogorets' penalties in European competition last year, in one shootout!) and made an English-language video with 10 Bart Verbruggen facts for all non-Dutch people to know and fear :p

If you're bored, the English part starts at 7:00 or so.

Also, I must say I really missed the 'Orange marches' :d

Last time was probably 2012, since after that we had 2014 (too far away), 2016 and 2018 (not qualified), 2021 (too spread around to feel like a tournament) and 2022 (Qatar, so yeah).

:cheer:

Spoiler

Anyone fancy this scenario?

Denmark beats Serbia, England "destroy" Slovenia (sorry for our Slovenian users), Turkye beats Czechia and Cristiano Ronaldo help Portugal beating Georgia by scoring at least a brace.

Thus Modric' Croatia goes on.

Won’t happen because Portugal then plays Croatia. They will just draw against Georgia if this scenario looms.

Since group win is already done I’m really expecting a match with the “second squad”, so without the best players.

that being said, it still might be possible that Ronaldo plays because he might want to score to beat some other record that he still has not beaten

Of course, anything is possible but it's hard for me to see Georgia being any trouble for Portugal.

I'd rather bet of Weghorst becoming the top goalscorer coming as substitute in every single match up to the final.

This was confirmed btw, Ronaldo will be in the starting squad against Georgia as well.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
