2023 European Games will be held basically in my backyard.

I think Rugby7s tournaments will be one of the most interesting things here. Olympic qualifier. We'll see what POL does here. I may go to watch it. I prefer men's competition in rugby though.

You could arrange ilegal transmission for us:p

Standings After 5/7 Events

1. :NZL - 98 (-)

2. :AUS - 84 (-)

3. :USA - 82 (-)

4. :FRA - 66 (-)

5. :IRL - 58 (-)

6. :FIJ - 48 (-)

7. :GBR - 44 (-)

8. :CAN - 26 (+2)

9. :JPN - 25 (-1)

10. :ESP - 20 (-1)

11. :BRA - 13 (-)

The only movement was Canada rising up two places. It would take something crazy for New Zealand to not win the title. They have qualified to the Olympics though. Australia and the United States are very close to the Olympics. They only need a 9th and 8th place finish respectively next round to be guaranteed a spot. Ireland's lead took a bit of a hit dropping from 16 to 10 against Fiji for the final Olympic quota. It's still a sizable lead, but another performance like this in Hong Kong would make the final event a lot more interesting.

Standings After 6/7 Events

2. :AUS - 102 (-)

3. :USA - 90 (-)

4. :FRA - 78 (-)

5. :IRL - 64 (-)

6. :FIJ - 62 (-)

7. :GBR - 60 (-)

8. :CAN - 36 (-)

9. :JPN - 28 (-)

10. :ESP - 24 (-)

11. :BRA - 15 (-)

No changes in the overall standings, but Ireland's poor performance combined with Fiji and Great Britain making the semifinals means the fight for the final Olympic quota will be interesting. Both Australia and the United States join New Zealand with an Olympic quota. On the relegation front things aren't looking good for Brazil who needs at least a 6th place finish and for results to go their way in order to survive.

Pools for the final round of the 22/23 Rugby 7s event in Toulouse have been announced and with only 4 points separating Ireland, Fiji and GBR it's all to play for in the battle for the final automatic Olympic berth and realistically, whichever of these teams is able to reach the semi-finals will bag the quota.

Pool A

:NZL :USA :CAN :POL

Should be relatively straightforward group - :NZL will come out on top followed by :USA. The key challenge for :CAN will be to minimise the scale of defeat  against :NZL if they are in with hope of taking a quarter final place. NB - haven't seen :POL in the tournament before so nothing to gauge their performance on but assume that :CAN greater experience will give them the edge.

Pool B

:AUS :FRA :IRL :BRA

This one could be close. Based on current form, :AUS should edge it to finish top of the group. Key match likely to be :FRA v :IRL to decide who takes second place. Again, based on form, think :FRA will be most likely winner, but :IRL should still be able to make the quarter finals as one of the best 3rd place finishers.

Pool C

:GBR :FIJ :ESP :JPN

The only real question in this group is whether :GBR or :FIJ emerge as group leaders. They've competed against each other 5 times in the last 4 events and :GBR edge the head-to-head by 3-2 so it is a tough call. Will go out on a limb and say :GBR to take the win (but actually would perhaps like them to lose as it could give them an easier quarter-final). :JPN likely to take 3rd place and probably be able to do enough to take final quarter final spot.

If my assumptions from above hold true, the quarter-finals would look something like this:

:AUS v :IRL - Australia probably would start as favourite

:GBR v :USA - Could be close but GBR have really poor track record against USA so USA likely to edge it

:FRA v :FIJ - Could go either way - can only find 1 match up between the two so far this season and FRA came out on top - both GBR and IRL would need FRA to win in order to keep quota hopes alive.

:NZL v :JPN - NZL to run out comfortable winners.

So assuming IRL, GBR and FIJ all lose in the quarter finals, the 5th place semi-finals would be:

:IRL v :GBR - Will be close but on current form, GBR could just have the edge

:FIJ v :JPN - FIJ would start as strong favourites

This could lead to a scenario where :GBR would compete against :FIJ for 5th place and :IRL were up against :JPN for 7th.

In this scenario, :GBR would be slight favourite to take 5th, with :FIJ 6th and :IRL 7th.

Final points totals:

:GBR - 72

:FIJ - 72

:IRL - 72

Don't have a clue who would qualify in that case

Reading the rules, in the event that the teams are tied on the same points, the tie breakers are:

1.) Overall Scoring Differential across the season

2.) Try count across the season.

On that basis, I think :FIJ would be the team to qualify as they are currently the only team with a positive points differential and have a 40 point cushion ahead of Ireland. They have also scored the most tries out of the 3 teams.

So Day 1 of competition is complete and there is only 1 round of pool matches to take place tomorrow. Pretty much everything has gone to form so far with the exception of Ireland who beat France 27-7.  As a result, Ireland are looking pretty certain to finish in 2nd place in their pool.

Big match tomorrow in pool C sees :GBR take on :FIJ - the winner of that match wins the pool but with the way the results have gone in the other groups, I'm not sure whether it is in :GBR interests to win the pool.

It's now looking like the quarter finals will be:

:AUS v :FRA - Would assume that Australia would start as favourite.

:GBR or :FIJ v :USA - If it is GBR v USA, it could be close, but GBR's poor track record against USA this season and the fact that they don't seem to be playing as well as they were in Hong Kong, means USA likely to edge it. Likewise, if it is Fiji against USA, it could go either way but USA have a 2-1 edge in the head-to-head stats this season.

:IRL v :FIJ or :GBR - This would become the all important quarter final because the likelihood is that the winner of this match takes the final Olympic quota.

:NZL v :CAN or :JPN - Canada marginal favourites to take the quarter-final place but if they suffer a complete blow out in their final pool match against NEw Zealand then Japan could over take them. Either way, NZL run out comfortable winners.

Now I see that our team lost 52-0 to :AUS and 43-0 to :FRA. Seriously, how did we become a core team?

Among women, you have no competition for the Olympic quota. For men, it's going to be complicated for you against Uruguay

    • It's not a coincidence that a lot of the matches that are earlier in the day are in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas where they have roofs.  And most of the games in the outdoor stadiums are later in the day.
    • The best athletes will all be there anyway – it's easier to get a spot in the top 10-15. Only the great champions were ahead of Gismondi today.
    • They are not "oppressed enough" to be mention here.
    • And remember the Olympic Paradox - it is slightly easier to get a medal at the Olympics than at a World Cup because in the Olympics the numbers of racers from the powerful nations are capped at 4.
    • Jimmy Mariano  basketball. 84 years old.   Member of the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Flag bearer for the Philippine delegation at those Games.
    • Franchi had a similarly impressive performance at the 2023 World Championships on the same distance but later she completly missing. I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
    • The last day was a great success, for first. Secondly, even 20 medals are fewer than the 22 from 2023 and 34 from 2021
