There were 21(!) jury decisions in this event. I don't remember ever seeing that many for one event: https://olympics.com/gangwon-2024/static/yog24d-/pdf/YOG24D-/CCS/YOG24D-_CCS_C73A_CCSW7.5KMIS-----------FNL-000100--.pdf

There were so many they had to put out a correction after confusing a few cases: https://olympics.com/gangwon-2024/static/yog24d-/pdf/YOG24D-/CCS/YOG24D-_CCS_C67_CCSW7.5KMIS-----------------------1.pdf

Have you ever seen something like this @heywoodu?

No, neither me nor Bruna have ever seen this, but I think the explanation in general is pretty simple: there's a 'classic technique zone', where you have to use the 'real' classic technique instead of double-poling. I'd bet money on "Using a banned technique on marked sections of the course" basically all coming from athletes double-poling on that part.

The 'Using skating technique' ones are probably largely down to inexperience, and not following the marked course can simply mean having gone way wide in a corner to avoid a crash or something like that. I've asked Bruna to contact Mariana and Julia and ask if they heard anything about this by any chance, and maybe whoever is there are their 'team captain' (if it's the guy I think it is, English might have been a real issue here in relaying these things to the athletes, but that is of course only one country).

Anyhow, you know what would have made this question easier to answer for everyone? It starts with a 'c' and rhymes with the word 'ameras' :p

I didn't even know there was such a thing in cross country skiing :yikes:

I assumed double-poling was totally fine anywhere on the course.

I haven't followed the curling mixed doubles competition, but below is an overview of qualification scenarios. Hopefully, I haven't made any mistakes.

Group A

This is the only group with no-mathematically-qualified teams yet and the only group with four teams still in contention. Remaining matches are Czechia-South Korea, which will be played first and Canada-Great Britain. If you don't want to get confused with text, jump directly to the tables.

If Czechia wins, then they qualify and they will be joined by the winner of the other match. If it's Great Britain, then GB wins the group and Czechia finishes second. If it's Canada, then Czechia wins the group and Canada ends up second.

To summarise, if Czechia wins.

Winner of :CAN-:GBR

/ Group Standings

1 2
:CAN :CZE :CAN
:GBR :GBR

:CZE

If South Korea wins, then the winner of Great Britain-Canada certainly wins the group.

If Great Britain loses that match, a three way tie between Czechia, Great Britain and South Korea will be created. In this case, South Korea will win the tie with a 2-0 win-loss record in the tie-breaker.

If Canada loses that match, a three way tie between Canada, Czechia and South Korea will be created. Win-loss record for all tied teams will be 1-1. In that case qualification will be decided based on draw shot challenge. At the moment, it's South Korea (43.46) ahead of Czechia (48.09) ahead of Canada (59.66).

To summarise, if South Korea wins.

Winner of :CAN-:GBR

/ Group Standings

1 2
:CAN :CAN :KOR
:GBR :GBR DSC (:CAN,:CZE,:KOR)

Group B

USA and Sweden have both secured their spots in the quarterfinals. US team is undefeated and still has one match to play. They are certainly first as they have won against Sweden, who completed the group with a 4-1 win-loss record.

Group C

China is the group winner as they are undefeated with one match to play and they have won against Japan and Latvia, both of them having a 3-1 win-loss record. These two teams are facing each other tomorrow, therefore whoever wins gets the second spot.

Group D

Both teams in the current top two, Germany and Switzerland, have completed their matches and they both have a 4-1 win-loss record. However, as I'll explain thoroughly, only Germany is mathematically qualified. Denmark is in third place with a 3-1 win-loss record and will face Kazakhstan tomorrow.

Obviously, if Denmark loses, then Germany and Switzerland are through to the quarterfinals, with the former winning the group, having won the direct match up.

If Denmark wins, then a three way tie at a 4-1 win-loss record will be created. In this case, the tie-breaker win-loss record will be 1-1 for all three teams and qualification will come down to draw shot challenge. But as I mentioned above, Germany and Switzerland have completed their matches, which means their current DSC is their final one. Since Germany (31.04) is better than Switzerland (79.90), Germany will definitely finish ahead of Switzerland in this tie. Given that Denmark's current DSC is 37.31, at the moment they also have the upper hand against Switzerland in this scenario.

    • Italy will boycott the Azeri stage for protest against the international federation.
    • Likely for Tannheimer, quite unlikely for Galmace Paulin. She's far from being assured to even start in the WC before turning 20. Basically she'd have to get a spot this season, which could actually happen if she takes the extra-ticket at the JWCH. Anyway I don't see her making her way to gold in Oslo. Tänglander has a few seasons to do it, we'll see.       Quite surprisingly so, indeed. Barring her horrendous finish Richard would have made it 2 in one go. We should have some more names in the list in 2025.
    • There are some of Slovakia's finest young squads at the World Juniors in recent years
    • Alpine skiing also we have a lot of problems: the men's team is very weak and has been winning a few podiums a season for several years and the our best skier- Dominik Paris is 35. We still have a strong women's team but 3 of the 4 leaders are over 30 (Goggia, Brignone, Curtoni) and Bassino is 28. Another 2 years and we will have the same problem as the men's. There is basically no cross-country skiing without Pellegrino for many years, biathlon is based on 2 individuals with one of them has a 35 years. Vittozzi's injury was enough and we haven`t a single podium this season after 3 stages of the World Cup. As for 1 year to the home games the situation isn`t optimistic.
    • Hail to the Reds... Commanders. First time since 1991 Washington QB has thrown 5 TD passes in a game (which isn't all that improbable in the modern game alas Dan Snyder...)
    • Italy is much better in alpine skiing, in The end all Nations have a Limited Talent Pool. Norway is far better than Sweden/Finland in Cross-Country skiing, alpine skiing and Biathlon, but Sweden/Finland are far better in ice Hockey.  Great Britain wins far more medals than Germany At Summer olympics, but GB is also inexistant in Winter Sports and Most popular Team Sports (Volleyball, Handball, Basketball, Ich Hockey).
    • Thanks, great stat! Tannheimer wont turn 20 until August 2025, so she has The whole Season To Join Kristiansen and Neuner. Too Bad that she was ill this week. I think Galmace Paulin and Tänglander could also do it. I think Grotian (born 2004) is The First female Biathlete born after 1999 To make a World Cup Podium. On The Mens side multiple Athletes (Perrot, Giacomel, Uldal) have already done it.   E. Öberg was 22 and a half when she First won.  Dahlmeier was 21 and a half.   Edit: Grotian only narrowly missed The Podium in The Individual at The 2024 World Championships when she was still  19 year old.
