By the way, there are nine sports on the list going for inclusion...is there a minimum or maximum number of sports to be selected? Like, do they have to select something, or can they choose to go with none of these sports? Or in the other side, can they choose to go for all nine, theoretically? Or is it a matter of choosing specifically X sports?

.

they can go with all  (respecting athletes quota cap) ..of course difficult but theortically can do.

Thanks! Yeah there's no way they will actually pick all of them of course, but it's always good to know what we should expect in terms of numbers.

There has been no indication. We don’t even know if the 10500 athletes cap is still real.

Exclusive: Cricket and flag football still on course for inclusion at Los Angeles 2028, as modern pentathlon looks to have saved itself

Genuinely shocked to see Modern Pentathlon survive once again.

Very glad, however, that Weightlifting is safe.

Given so many media reports from various sources (and reading the tea leaves somewhat) it seems quite certain that Breaking, Cricket and Flag Football (ugh) are in, with Baseball/Softball being on the bubble.

ITG’s reporting makes it seem like LA28 wants flag football, but isn’t entirely sold on cricket, while the IOC wants cricket, but isn’t sold on flag football. I do feel like including both is a fair compromise, but they need to figure how the quota distribution will affect other sports.

The point about who’s footing the bill for all the new inclusions is something I hadn’t considered either.

It would be crazy for the IOC not to push cricket ....  it will earn huge amounts for the IOC on television rights in the sub continent alone ....the recent world cup of cricket television rights to cricket were sold for 3 billion dollars.... I am not sure in which sport the television rights sell  for so much with the exception of football,

And possibly tennis

With the enormous diaspora in America / Canada of Indians , if they get a rare chance to see world class cricket in US they will buy tickets like crazy .....

I really find some of the comments that it is a difficult sport to understand or that it is not followed in Europe really limited in their world view. Cricket is not one of those sports followed by a few thousand or million. It is the second most followed sports in the world with over 2.5 billion viewers,  second only to soccer .  It is an extremely rich sport as well.

I think the reason that it has not been in the Olympics already is that the cricket association is  parochial and has not been open to the integration. With the board open now , it is only for IOC to benefit hugely by the inclusion.

I assume the subcontinent pays for the tv rights right now. Are you suggesting they pay more just because cricket is added?

The fact that Cricket is not popular in parts of the world in itself is no reason to not include it. The same could be said for other sports that are currently included.

    • I will do my best to organise a pairs competition also involving nations from the 4 teams that are eliminated in the first half of the team competition along with the lowest ranked individual nations at the halfway point (end of session 2) to form 8 pairs. Pairs will be balanced so that the highest ranked nation in the competition will be paired with the lowest ranked nation, second highest with the second lowest and so on. All of that will be based on the individual ranking at the halfway point.   This way every nation will have at least interest in some event until the end of the 3rd session.   I will probably base it closely on @mrv86‘s proposed rules, and have sprints every 3 rounds of votes. The pairs with most medals from those 3 rounds get the points along with an extra bonus for medal and points doubles.   I do only have 1 day to organise this now so I can’t promise anything though.

    • The two-woman quota is based upon the "combined" ranking. The 6 best monobob + 6 best 2-woman results are taken into account at the moment (7 once this week's WC race has been raced).  Weiszewski competed in Europe Cup yesterday in the monobob, finishing 2nd, which gave her 110 points. This was her 7th monobob race, so this result replaced her worst (80 points), helping her leapfrog Cernanska by 8 points. At this point I guess she's in a better spot, as she's got the same room for improvement in the two-woman today, while Cernanska probably won't compete that well in the WC.
