Cross-Country Skiing FIS World Cup 2021 - 2022

Recommended Posts

Cross-country really is in the backburner of everyone it seems. I doubt France would cancel so quick, if it was biathlon or alpine, or Slovenia if it was ski-jumping.

I feel like cross country skiing is having a real identity crisis right now. Especially with the increased popularity of biathlon.

Is biathlon actually gaining popularity? :yikes:

I don't know if it's because of the cynical posts on here so often, but I somehow feel like every sport in the world has a huge decline in popularity :p  Other than football, of course.

Now, this must be annoying for everyone involved at Les Rousses.  After cancelling the CC World Cup, we find out that it could have gone ahead after all as King Emmanuel I decides that les sangs impurs can once again visit la Patrie.

So apart from Norway, Russia, Sweden and Finland is cross country skiing popular(even if minutely)  in other countries?

I personally like only sprint ( classical or free)  and mass starts(only if the mass start is over a one way route and not small closed loops and more importantly freestyle mass starts only, can't watch classical ones , so that I can enjoy the view too ) The final stage event of Tour De Ski was quite interesting.

In North America it’s like cycling - ie lots of people do it, but don’t necessarily follow it as a professional sport.  In Italy, Germany, France it’s a regional sport, very strong in some areas, unknown in most.  In other countries, it’s popular when a fellow countryman is winning, less so when they’re not.

I find it quite relaxing to watch provided there is a scenic well treed route.

If this is true, stupid FIS

Although the FIS has not yet wanted to cancel competitions, they had already been unofficially looking for a replacement for days, as Östersund revealed to the media. The Swedish biathlon stronghold had been asked by the FIS whether they could take over the World Cup final. This would have saved another flight at the end of the season and could have continued directly with vehicles from Falun to Östersund. The organizer in Östersund gave the FIS a deadline in order to have planning security and enough time for the preparations. However, the FIS let this deadline pass and did not yet give a definite commitment to the Swedes, so that Östersund withdrew its yes to the World Cup final. It has not yet been announced whether the FIS has other organizers up its sleeve.

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
