Big air = skiers use poles to ski, Aerials = no poles.

Aerials is more closely related to gymnastics, Big Air is more closely related to organic freeski.

I don’t think anyone doing either would be able to easily transition to the other. The styles are completely different.

That said, aerials should really be dropped for 2026. There’s not enough athletes/countries competing to justify its spot on the Olympic program, and it would free up quotas that will be badly needed elsewhere during the next round of cuts. I love aerials, but it the discipline’s days on the Olympic program should realistically be numbered.

Couple ones.

  • In aerials, the skier is launched straight into the air and travels a very short distance horizontally. In big air the skier is launched forward moreso than upwards.
  • Aerials is a lot like diving - every jump has a degree of difficulty based on the number of flips and spins. Every jump is judged based on form in the air and landing, and that is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to get a final score.
  • Big air is scored more subjectively, with a 0-100 scale. There are no set degree of difficulty.
  • Aerials tricks must be pencilled (i.e. the body of the aerialist should remain as straight as possible) to achieve high form scores. In big air pencilling leads to massive deductions.
  • In big air grabbing the skis during tricks is one of the most important way to increase your score. Grabs are not permitted in aerials.
  • In big air you tan takeoff forwards or backwards (switch). In aerials you can only takeoff forwards.
  • In big air the judges take into consideration whether you did a trick in your natural or unnatural spin direction. This isn’t taken into account in aerials.

Even though on the surface big air and aerials look very similar there is zero overlap between the competitors. The techniques used in both are quite different.

Basically the most limited discipline on the program (Summer or Winter).

Around 10 countries have their squads... And that's it.

Yet more exciting in terms of winning nations than bobsleigh, if you exclude women's monobob.

Agreed. I'd rather watch the entire aerials event rather than bobsleigh( usually 20mins at the end only). Nations are few but scoring looks more transparent as compared to big air in which I just couldn't differentiate how a 80 pointer was better than 90 pointer while looking almost exactly alike.

With the nature of aerials 6-7 nations have medal (winning) potential in women and 3-5 in men which is fine.

    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
    • Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel with a 5th place PB in Semmering GS!
    • Today RDC will defeat Senegal  and Tunisia 0-0 Nigeria
