Couldn’t they build a temporary Speed Skating venue in any sort of random arena in France?

Personally I am *extremely* pro cross country running, cyclocross and snow volleyball being added to the Winter Olympics (and raising the athlete cap to like 4k).

Shouldn't certain sports try and gain more of an international following first? I mean, who on earth actually cares at all about cyclocross except for Belgians and a few Dutch? And how many people even know snow volleyball exists in the first place? :p

That was suggested but apparently the IOC has this fascination of holding an event outside the country

Seems like substainability theatre to me.

Is sticking an ice rink in an existing building not very sustainable anymore?

In the past IOC demanded almost everything in the same city/region. Bach's reforms made venues sites selection more flexible but it seems we have gone on the opposite edge

Probably making it stricter again will lead to no interest in hosting at all anymore, like there already is so very little of.

That's why I said sustainability theatre, not sustainability.

IMO hosting speed skating in an existing venue in the Netherlands is about the appearance of cost cutting moreso than it is really about cost cutting.
