Swimming Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Universality quotas account for around 200 and relay-only athletes will also be at around 175. That's already 44% of the total swimming quota, leaving just over half for the "actual" individual competitors.

To translate better, each event would have an average of 17 unique swimmers. Of course, in swimming there are athletes which compete in multiple events, but even with that it isn't hard to see why some events struggle to have 16 non-universality entrants.

It was the women’s 200m fly in Tokyo where 16 entered the heats, so all 16 qualified for the semi finals

They had 17 entered, and one DNS

Oh and one of the 16/17 was a universality place for Honduras. 13 had the standard prior to the games

It's events like that where common sense should come into play. If there's less than 20 swimmers qualified in any situation (ie A cut, B cut or universality) when the final numbers are crunched, just adjust the schedule so the event has only heats and final. The event won't be ruined if that happens.

A few things:

1. Chelsea Hodges just surprise retired following chronic injuries and surgeries. I’m devastated. She’ll always be an Olympic champion though.

2. @NearPup I agree they should aim for 20 swimmers in events with semis. Don’t care if there’s less than 20 if there’s no semis anyway. Could force universality swimmers to only enter events that are low on numbers. That could be fun.

3. NearPup again: Your second point kind of defeats the whole purpose of A and B cuts. This would lead to the strong swimming countries, who already have an advantage, sneaking in extra individual swimmers using relay spots. You would end up with swimmers from smaller countries not being invited while slower swimmers from big swim countries racing individually purely because their country has good relays. I don’t think flooding the heats with extra B cut swimmers who have no chance of medalling is necessarily a positive.

The athletes are qualified anyway, they are taking up quota spots as is. Might as well get more use out of those athletes, especially when we are in a situation where we're struggling to get enough athletes in some events to justify holding a semi-final.

If I understand the qualifying process correctly, as things stand it looks like there will be more men qualified than women. It's strange that the IOC doesn't enforce equality in swimming the way they do in the majority of other sports.

Yeah, it's not even close. 308 men have achieved an OQT in the qualification period compared to 242 women. Ultimately, there's just much more depth on the men's side compared to the women's.

Safe to say that the men's 50m freestyle will have no shortage of swimmers.

Generally, a popular event amongst universality swimmers too.

Second OQT achieved at the :IRL Olympic trials with Tom Fannon going under the time for 50m freestyle. He had already swam the time but not at one of the designated events by Swim Ireland.

Team Ireland now up to 5 individuals

Daniel Wiffen (400,800,1500 free)

Mona McSharry (100m breast)

Ellen Walshe (200 IM)

Danielle Hill (100 back)

Tom Fannon (50 free)

Others have the OCT time so we’ll see what happens with them

The final day is today and while there hasn’t been any further qualifiers, Danielle Hill has added the 50m free OQT and Ellen Walshe has added the 400 IM OQT

Some more OCTs and a bunch of Irish records too

OK, that's interesting. Not been picked for the individual event so far

In fairness, GBR never confirm ahead of time who is swimming what. Just that they are on the team. So, in a very technical sense, not even Adam Peaty has been picked for the individual yet. :p

Angharad was always likely to get that individual swim given that she's the only British female breaststroker there, she had the A cut anyway and she isn't likely to have a heavy schedule.

But this performance makes it an almost certainty. Puts her just inside the top 20 ever and if she can repeat it in Paris would make her a threat for a final place. Great swim.

    • Fewer people do do this sport compared to the 90s, less money is spent on it, etc. In the case of women, at some point this sport was almost abandoned because of the belief that it was impossible to beat Scandinavia ( the times of Norwegian domination with Bjoergen and Johaug at the forefront). Only in the last 2 years has Markus Cramer been hired, who is gradually rebuilding the men's and women's teams. Suffice it to say that the last medalist of the World Championships for Italy in the women's was Arianna Follis in 2011... I will also remind you that in 2022 Pellegrino and de Fabiani trained with the Russian team, because the rest of the Italian team was in such poor shape that they couldn`t train together
    • Well that is a totally different question  I too have wondered what happened to Italian cross-country and how there is no one coming for so many years. But it shouldn't take away from the sports where progress has been made.
    • Where to Watch guide.  Discovery plus in most of Europe       https://www.ucitrackchampionsleague.com/watch-the-races
    • Appetite grows with eating. Especially since it's not like we develop in every winter sport... For example, 20 years ago we were a powerhouse in cross-country skiing and now we have only 1 Pellegrino (34 age) and a few talented youngsters. And let's remember that our performance in Turin was objectively weak for us: only 11 medals in total. Now, when I hear that we will to win 2O+, some discipline must definitely add medals and also compensate for the losses in cross-country skiing, for example.
    • The problem is that this mixed team has never played together since then. There was talk of personal obstacles. I don't know how it`s now.
    • Well that explains why she is wearing more clothes with every passing day.   Nevertheless that team is still one of the best in the world and is a vast improvement on what Italy was doing 10-20 years ago.
    • Any idea where a full schedule can be found yet? I remember last seasons the website was always godawful in terms of providing that basic kind of information..
    • Constantinis team have made huge improvements since 2022 even if they are not best yet. And Constantini never was world leading in mixed doubles before Beijing olympic either so it is not like she really have lost anything since 2022 either, except not being able to repeat that success.
    • She had health problems yesterday. Nevertheless, after the gold in mixed doubles with Mosaner in 2022, I counted a bit more on her development. I still think that the biggest chance for us in 2026 will be the mixed team, rather than our teams.
    • I don't know who Italy should field for the doubles? Sinner has the greatest individual strength but he probably doesn't train with anyone on the team. Last year Sinner played 2 doubles with Sonego in the Davis Cup (two wins) but this year Sonego isn`t in the squad. On the other hand the Bolelli-Vavassori doubles are well-coordinated, as is the Argentine one, but individually these players don't even mean as much as Sinner's 1 hand. For me the Sinner/Berettini option is possible but the question is: did they train together on last day?
