Qualified:FRA :NZL :AUS :IRL :USA :CAN :GBR :FIJ :RSA :BRA :JPN

Final repêchage tournament:CHN :HKG :POL :CZE :KEN :UGA :ARG :PAR :MEX :JAM :SAM :PNG

11 of the 12 World Series team have qualified. Spain the odd one out even failed to get to the repêchage.

Interesting tournament since it will quite simply be a Challenger Series additional edition (with Samoa and Jamaica instead of Thailand and Belgium), so how each team compares to the others will be known beforehand.

I'd say Samoa are strong favourites BUT I wouldn't under-estimate the Kenyans or Argentinians. Anyone else would be a bit of a shock, but shocks do happen and this looks, like the Challenger series, like a cracking competition. Like Field Hockey, final Olympic Qualifiers can provide a hell of  a spectacle in themselves (last time in field hockey when Canada and Ireland split the last chance saloon finals, ties were extraordinarily tense - other team sports take note!)

Don't underestimate China here.

Samoa is pretty weak in women's rugby sevens, to the point where they could realistically finish last in the final qualifier. :PNG is a better Pacific nation and that's not saying much either.

Predicting rugby sevens is a fool's game, but I can use a laugh in a few months :p

Let's see how far off I am...

I'm still so mad that Spain lost that freaking match in the European Games, like how can you play SO bad being a core team like... it made no sense. It would have been a easy win at the preolympic should they qualified...

I feel you've mistaken this thread for the men's, else I can't see how you would make these calls in all seriousness :d

My predictions:

1° to 4° : :POL | :CHN | :CZE | :ARG

5° to 8° : :KEN | :HKG | :PAR | :SAM

9° to 12° : :UGA | :MEX | :PNG | :JAM

Invert Samoa and PNG and we're kinda good. As I said, most of the participating teams will battle each other out in the Challengers, thus creating a coherent draw. Not that it matters in a winner-takes-it-all tournament but that's more fair anyway.

First Challenger last week in Dubaï :

:CHN :KEN

:ARG :UGA

:BEL :POL

:THA :CZE

:PNG :HKG

:PAR :MEX

Difficult tournament for the European teams. Poland seem to struggle a little bit lately. Czech Republic managed to win against Kenya in pool stage but tumbled after that. Belgium, who won't be in Monaco, didn't look dominant and wasted a shot at the SF against Uganda, who overachieved a bit here I'd say.

Kenya didn't make it easy for China but the latter looked the better team overall, though their path to Paris is not written. Argentina is indeed climbing up, I highly fancy their chances in a few months time.

We did beat :PAR and :HKG, but did lost to :ARG in group and then in QF to :CHN by big margin, then :BEL beat us in lucky for them way in 5th place match. Our girls had problems with used to local climate and two our best players didn't played here, one by injury, second by pregnancy. I believe that it will be better for them to be in peak of form in June, when it will matter the most, than now.

    • Ceccarelli wanted to take money from the federation and train daughter in her team. The federation didn`t want to agree to this, because we are talking about a 16-year-old girl at the time. Private teams have stars with recognized achievements, e.g. Brignone or Goggia. In my opinion, Ceccarelli could have collected money from private funds, after all, with such successes of her daughter it would not be a problem. Tina Maze also separated from Slovenia at some point and created her own team. In a situation in which Colturi would start to achieve successes, then the federation should start to finance her team more + private sponsors. For me it is simple.
    • I think that It's a similar situation with Braahten in Norway but there are some differences:     - he's an adult, - his mother is Brazilian, - Norway has a lot of talent in technical events (although of course it's always better to have 1 more than 1 less).
    • Looks like the gate malfunctioned and Eriksen Sundal was literally pushed by the ad board
    • Well, we lived through Caroline Wozniacki representing Denmark and there was some talk if she could switch to Poland early on but she said no since she lived her entire life in Denmark anyway. But she was very popular here. On the other side Angelique Kerber who also has Polish ancestry actually lived in Poland on her grandfather's estate (which was a tennis academy). In the last few years except Eugenia Bujak (cycling) switching to Slovenia due to a conflict with the federation we don't really have such cases. I can understand many Italians have their opinion on Colturi & her mother alas it's boosted by the lack of other top end prospects in your skiing now (and some other winter sports). I'm surprised Italian journalists haven't figured out what's behind Colturi's switch already because it has to be money or "personal differences" either way.
    • Or is Girardelli respected in Austria these days...
    • We must ask our Austrian users if they cheered for Girardelii. But do we have any Austrian users LOL?
    • It's just that Austria had a lot of skiers in that time and we don't have any others among the young ones now.
    • Marco Girardelli went to Luxembourg one day and he had a great career. I doubt he did regret that move.

    • You know, but we still don't know what that was about. Ceccarelli has a difficult character but still changing colors to a country with which you have absolute no connetions? What would you say if Iga Swiatek fell out with the Polish tennis federation and started playing for Luxembourg or Andorra? Certainly not everyone would decide to take such a step, even if they had to give in a little in talks with the federation.    Another thing is that the Italian training system simply doesn`t work. As you can see, there are talents but we don`t know how to train them. Since the golden generation born in 1990-1995 (Brignone, Bassino, Goggia) we haven`t trained anyone who would stand on the podium in giant slalom or slalom in World Cup. So something is wrong. At the beginning of the 21st century we had a large group of good athletes in giant slalom (maybe not at Brignone's level): Karbon, Moelgg, Putzer, Gius, etc., who were able to win World Cups, win World Championship medals, etc. Now we have no one. In women's giant slalom for example: if Brignone and Bassino are gone, even getting to the first 20 in World Cup will be a problem for us.
